I can't find anywhere that it says the "bonus" attack with the back of the weapon has to be made within 5 feet of the enemy. Our DM says that's the way it is. I don't know where he's reading that.
You are correct. There is no restriction placed on the reach with the polearm master feat. If your DM is making a house rule, that's up to him, but if you don't like it, he should let you swap feats.
The bonus attack from PAM has all the same properties as the regular attack with the same weapon aside from the damage die and damage type. If anything else were different, it would say so in the feat's description.

It's for the next character/campaign. It makes no sense to have to step into melee range for the bonus attack and then what, step back again?
