Don't you ever feel like very few people around you share the same level of excitmente about the game? I've been playing for more almost 7 years exclusively as a DM and have dedicated a lot of time and effort to bring more people to the hobby and many have liked the game and hang around enough to complete adventures or play again a one shot here and there.
But during the rest of the days there is little talk in the server or group chats, I share news and all kind of stuff simply trying to make some conversation but there's rarely any follow up.
I am aware that being 35 yo most of the people I'm surrounded deal with work, family and even health stuff...I certainly go through that stuff as well but still find some time to check about this hobby.
I think I'm just nostalgic of those days where you could spend hours talking about games very passionately with friends without having to pivot to some dense issue. Just games, soda, pizza and music or something playing on the tv.
I do not like discussing the game between players except at the table.
I feel its a bit of meta gaming against the DM.
As for talking about the game in general we do not have that much need. The DM sets the rules and us talking about it sounds like complaining.
As for discussing other games we would like to try we do that all the time. If two players can not make it to game day the rest of us just break out a board game and have at it.
Investment levels always vary between people at the proverbial table. This goes for real pen-and-paper, as well as more MMO style RP. Over in NWN 2, there were always some people who put a LOT into playing believable characters who had actual lives....and then the ones who really just logged in to do something crazy, then bugger off with no follow up to anything at all, much less discussion in between.
I've come to just accept that people play the game for different reasons or with different intentions, and really... that's okay. It can frustrate me if someone is not thinking a lot about their character or getting excited about things. But then again; that other person probably thinks I am OVER-THINKING what's supposed to be just a few hours of fun now and again.
It is always great when everyone is as invested of course. It's just important to also chill and not -expect- everyone to. Our current Dragon Queen run has a mix of all; some of us are really going to town with our character stories, some are just there for hijinks, and some...really are just floating through, and mostly there to hang out in general. It's working out in the end. I think the thing that would be most irritating is if someone had no investment at all, AND was just doing lazy/ random things that clearly announced they simply do not care about anything. THAT would be well past mild annoyance...

It can be frustrating, silver lining is even though the other players are busy and do not engage in the out of game chat the do show up to play.
