Greetings, I'm currently Dming a game of Decent to Avernus. One of my players, a Tiefling Warlock has no idea what's to come. Canonically, I'm not sure how well this works so i would like some feedback.
His earliest memories stem from when he was a child left abandoned in Baldur's Gate. Someone takes him and and brings him to an orphanage within the city walls. A place i named the Blacksmere Orphanage. Here he finds a friend, i.e. another player of mine. After coming to age they are sent to the brutal reality of the world. He find sanctum in the Shrine of Suffering and becomes an Acolyte. Granted a Warlock with an Acolyte background already a weird circumstance but it works for him i believe.
As far as his charcter goes, he has Warlock abilities without knowing the pact he had to make with any fiend. This is where it gets fun.
It wasn't him that made a pact but a deal made by Zariel and Baphomet. Seeing that Tieflings can have various bloodlines i thought it was a good idea to create a family that is inbeded with the nine hells and Avernus.
After their deal was made, Zariel bred a family of worshippers to hand over to Baphomet. I do not know the lore if this is reasonable or why Baphomet now resides in the Nine Hells. From what I've read Baphomet is the Lord of The Endless Maze. Which is a layer of the Abyss.
If anyone can help me make more sense of this or line it up better than i have please share.
The big thing to remember is, the “official” lore doesn’t matter. If you find a story that works for your table, that’s all that matters. The lore can be a great resource and jumping off point, but the second it starts to get in the way of your game, it needs to take a back seat. What matters more is that your table is having fun, and to a lesser extent, that the story is internally consistent.
With that in mind, what you’re saying here sounds like it should work.
There's no history of Zariel and Baphomet working together; in fact, it's the opposite. As an Archduke and a Demon Lord on opposite sides of the Blood War's front lines, there's no love lost between the two. However, if you deem they find common ground somehow, then yes, this would work.

I don't see why devils would be above dealing with the enemy, especially if it has a chance to bolster their personal power. The question is, what is Zariel getting in return?

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.

You do have a point. It's my table, and i have 5 players that are all brand new to DnD. My biggest thing is a great story, as lomg as i love it and my players do to, that's what matters. I just want it to be coherent and just make sense. Thank you
Okay I see, I think i can do that. There is a part, where the players could eventually meet Zariel in one way or another, i just wanted help to see what i missed to make it make sense. Thank you :)

Zariel fell and became a devil because of her hatred of demons. It would take one heck of a major thing to convince her to make a deal with a Demon Prince.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
So basically i need one hell of an explanation on why enemies would even make such a deal in the first place. I didn't really read that much into it but that's a solid point.

Ah, I didn't know that. Well, maybe Zariel plans to do a double-cross? Devils have been known to be tricksy with deals on one or two occasions.
Maybe the solution is to just make the patron a devil instead of demon. The fiend pact is definitely meant to include both.

Okay okay, i think i might just do that. I saw that a common Fiend patron was Baphomet and that his stat block was in this module. I thought maybe i could fit it in but maybe that just doesnt make sense in the context of the Blood War.
Does Zariel have any ally devils where this deal could make a bit more sense?
Is it possible if i used the bloodline of Asmodeus instead and the deal was between him and Zariel?
Okay good, that makes it a lot easier. I think for now the Asmodeus/ Zariel deal makes a lot of sense at least for my instance. They both fight on the same side of the Blood war and an alliance would be way more logical.
This also allows for the potential plot of him to make a deal with Zariel in the late game.

You pose a good question. I'm going have to think about that.

As the current Lord of the First, Zariel could have an alliance with any devil you choose for her.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! I can't wait for this plot to evolve into a great story to be told.
