I was running a One-Shot this last Saturday, and one of my players was playing a Gloom Stalker Ranger.
The group had descended into some sewers to clear them out for a reward.
There were no light sources, save the light coming through the sparce access grates, so it was very dark.
I was not familiar with the Gloom Stalker'sUmbral Sightability. The player read the description to me, and it seemed pretty simple... In darkness, they would be invisible to creatures that rely on Darkvision.
I have a few questions/clarifications that came up during our game, and want to hear your opinion on them:
When the description states "any creature that relies on Darkvision to see", does this mean any creature that HAS Darkvision, or only creatures that cannot see in any other manor (I ask because I can't think of creatures that ONLY have Darkvision, and not standard vision as well)?
When they are considered 'invisible' how close do you let creatures get to them before they 'see' the character? (The player was squatting and had rolled very good stealth, but they had another party member right behind them {Dragonborn Barbarian), and a Goblin {with Darkvision} was charging the Dragonborn, and I was not sure how to handle the 'invisible' part as they approached)
As the description of Umbral Sight specifically links that the character is Invisible, I would assume that any attack would give away their position. How do you handle the character going back invisible, as it is not a spell, and is a passive bonus (do you make them use an action on their next turn to hide)?
Any help or suggestions on how this is handled at your tables is greatly appreciated :)
Cheers!

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
If they can see them with a different manner to Darkvision, they can see using that other sense.
They're always invisible. There is no range on it. However if they're close enough to hear, they have to take the Hide Action to be Hidden (otherwise, it's just Disadvantage).
They're always Invisible. Once they attack (and if they don't Hide again), then the creature knows where they are, so it's just Disadvantage on attacks. If they Hide, then they need to guess where the Gloom stalker is.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
I can only say how it would be handled at my table but hope it helps
1. I would take the wording to mean any creature actively using darkvision to see. As an example if you have a completely dark room and 2 goblins inside with you 1 with darkvision and 1 with true sight the darkvision one would treat the ranger as always invisible where the true sight one would not.
2. With Umbral sight's wording the ranger would be invisible at all times to the creature using darkvision regardless of distance. This doesnt mean the ranger is not attackable or that they wouldnt know he was around but they would not be able to garner its exact location.
3. This is the strongest part of that specific ability because as above as long as the creature is using their darkvision they always treat the ranger as invisible even if it is not stealthed. It is best to think of it like greater invisibility with extremely specific activation, but is cleared with a different sense (lighting a torch, tremorsense, truesight, scent or blind creatures who use hearing instead would be examples)

Thank you both, this helps :)
