I have been playing around with the new handbook and found something fun that is probably something that not every DM will allow at your table, but if you multiclass you can pick one class from the 2024 rules and one from the 2014 rules.
This means you can actually multiclass twice in the same class! Your level 6 barbarian can take 3 in berserker and 3 in zealot as long as you do different editions.
Now I’m trying to figure out the most fun or powerful combinations for multi class!
So far my favorite is adding 2014 cleric to something to get a subclass, heavy armor and shield proficiency with one level dip
Two levels of tempest cleric on the new sea Druid could be devastating!
I wouldn't really allow that at my table. Or if I did you can only multiclass once per class. Period.
As far as an interesting build idea, I been messing around with some kind of Dark Ranger. Like I don't have it all fully conceptualized yet, but it would be a Ranger/Rogue/Warlock. Ranger and Rogue are already very similar, but some of the darker spells from the Warlock would add some interesting flavor. And it would definitely be evil aligned. Anyways, I'm still messing around with it. Needs work for sure.
You're supposed to choose things from the 2014 edition if it isn't in the 2024 rules.
Regarding same class from 2014 and 2024, currently you can do so with DDB. So far I'm uncertain how much benefit you will get. For instance a 5/5 anything will double up on some things but duplicate class features only stack to a point. Spell casters will have a TON of slots but compared to a lvl 10 caster their spells will be low level.
I can see wanting double Action Surge, or more Rages, or more Wild Shapes...

Tell me your own fun build ideas!
The rules themselves don't really allow for this. For example there is almost no point in taking a fighter class twice as you only get a feature once. Subclasses in the game are so close to other classes that that's probably the way you would want to go. Unless you rule that a player could get the same feature twice. But at that point you are probably looking to cause yourself a headache.
There are rules, which you are welcome to throw out, but just because D&DBeyond allows something doesn't make it RAW. It has long allowed you to take the same fighting style multiiple times when that isn't allowed in the rules for one example.
Yeah, I knew that. Even if your dm allowed my barbarian example, you wouldn’t get double unarmored defense. But you could potentially get a bear totem Barb with divine strikes if you were willing to wait on other features.
i knew most of this stuff wouldn’t be allowed at most tables. I just wanted to talk about weird hypotheticals and power combos that maybe weren’t possible until the new edition

It does specify in the rules that it is not allowed.
Fighting Style
You adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can’t take a Fighting Style option more than once, even if you later get to choose again.
WIth regard to choosing two subclasses of the same class because of the way of wonky programming - I'm not sure if there is a vast problem with it. It's broken no doubt, but there is nothing wrong with playing with it while we can.
I challenge you ArmorStorm to create a lvl 10 character which is a 2014/2024 same class multi-subclass which is truly unbalanced. I only say so because I want to see it =) I'll work on one myself. Let's include everything except no homebrew.

The best use for same-class multiclassing is to copy over your choices if you're updating your character to the new rules, and aren't level 11 or higher.

Or the player is just going to be ineffective.

First, my point was that DDB allows stuff that the actual rules don’t. I know you can’t take fighting styles repeatedly.
Second, it’s not about it being OP and I don’t like/support “builds”. But go ahead and take a shot, I’d be interested in seeing something cool.
