I'm currently working on creating a homebrew class for my campaign, and I wanted to get some feedback and advice from the community here on D&D Beyond. This class is a shadow-based rogue spellcaster, and I’m trying to balance the abilities to make it fun and fair for the party while still feeling unique.
Here are a few questions I’d love your input on:
Subclass Design: I’m trying to design a subclass where the character can manipulate shadows to cast spells and deal sneak attack-like damage. Any tips on how to make this feel powerful but not too overpowered?
Spellcasting Balance: The class will have limited spellcasting, drawing from a mix of Rogue and Warlock spell lists. How would you balance spellcasting progression with the martial abilities of a Rogue to keep things from feeling too lopsided?
Flavor vs. Mechanics: I love the idea of making this class feel thematically tied to shadows and darkness, but I want to make sure the mechanics aren’t overshadowed (pun intended!). Any advice on blending flavor with solid mechanical effects?
Existing Homebrew Resources: Are there any great resources you’d recommend to help with designing custom classes or balancing homebrew content? I’ve checked out some of the resources here on D&D Beyond, but I’d love to hear if anyone has specific recommendations!
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
My first thought was why not just use Arcane Trickster Rogue as a basis and adjust it to your shadow theme.
And are you looking to homebrew a class (you can’t do it on DDB) or a subclass (which you can do here)
Edit: you can take AT subclass as a basis and customize the spell list they can pick from. Maybe work in a Cunning Strikes option on sneak attack that is shadow based or works well while using a shadow feature you create as a subclass feature.
