I have an idea for a warforged character, and wanted to know if it would fly for a campaign or even a single game.
Picture this a Gnomish couple; Emmit an Artificer who made the PC and his wife Clara a monk who trained him to fight, initially he was raised around fey so he learned sylvan and common language, being more protective of nature. But still can be hired out by 'partys' seeking out the coupe to rent the PC. Any cut of the earnings from a quest is returned to the gnomish couple, since the PC is self sufficient, not really requiring upkeep, food or vanities.
This is a question you would have go ask your DM, not strangers on the internet. Every DM is going to have a different view on how strict they are on following the lore.
Warforged are a species exclusive to Eberron. A more permissive DM might say “you can use the warforged species for any construct,” but a stricter DM might insist that Warforged only be used in that specific setting. If you are playing in Eberron you have some substantial lore difficulties - Warforged are exclusively created by one of the human houses (Cannith) and their production is illegal.
To illustrate how I would rule - if you were playing at my table and the setting was anything other than Eberron, I would allow this, using “Warforged” as a generic stand-in for any construct race. If the setting was Eberron, I would not allow this - Warforged creation is an important part of the setting’s lore and could be a critical element of story, so allowing a generic Warforged could create story problems. In such a situation, I would recommend you use an Autognome (mechanical gnome species from Spelljammer: Adventures in Space) or a Wechselkind (an animated wooden puppet from Grim Hollow’s Player Pack).
Your next issue is the playstyle - taking money away from the collective party and sending it to NPCs is kind of rude. It would be seen as wasting party resources for the benefit of something completely off table, and that could create party tension, with your character being the problem. I would probably figure a way around this as a DM - making it clear I was artificially inflating rewards so the party still ended up with the “correct” amount of gold after your cut vanished into the aether. Others might not do that, and you’d be increasingly disliked as the campaign wore on. Particularly when you get to points where your character might need money (gear, payment for services, etc.) and have to mooch off others.
Others might rule completely differently - which is why you need to ask your DM, not just random folks.
I wasn't sure as I'm not up on the lore behind the magic robots, I was just going to play off of not needing gear and weapons since a Warforged that fights bare handed, wouldn't need a room, upkeep, gear since it mends itself during down time, even if left at the edge of town to 'sleep' and 'recover' plus like a paladin/monk most of their take-home cut of coins of a quest is given as charity and offerings for their deity, the rest to upkeep for their appearance. As it was just a way to see if i could pull off a servant style "rent-a-robot." The coin would be used to play off of affording upgrades every time it earned a new level.
I'd also given it prestidigitation to tend to the party's minor comforts including doing laundry (folding clothes in a designated pile and using that cantrip to clean them) plus also mend, to heal itself during combat as an action (attack-heal-attack-heal-etc) since cantrips have no limit if i read correctly.
But nonetheless, thanks for the feedback, I think I'll stick with human variant bards, they are more fun.
