I wonder if the D&D developers will ever explore sideways advancement as opposed to the current level-based advancement. Although D&D has a wealth of lore to pull from, I've always like the advancement style of Shadowrun and World of Darkness.

Likely not, as there are likely too many people who would immediately go into frothing tirades about how the new design direction "isn't D&D" anymore. Even small adjustments in previous editions spawned whole waves of edition wars and complaining and also ended up spinning off into the creation of D&D's nearest distant competitor in the RPG arena.
