So here is the deal. We were on a D&D 5e campaign and were adventuring and camped next to a forest. While we were sleeping we got transferred to a mysterious swamp. In the swamp from a NPC we learned that in order to get out of the swamp we had to kill the necro mage there. The NPC was going to show us where the mage was but before he could do it one of our party members triggered him into battle (to acquire his cleave) and we ended up killing him after a hard battle. Now we don't know where we are and where the mage is.
We are in a shack in middle of swamp and no map, no info nothing.
We have Warlock, Cleric, Paladin, Barbarian, Sorcerer, Rogue in our team.
How can we proceed with finding mage? Any ideas?
How can we do our search? To we prey to our deity? Do we run a search party?
Unfortunately our cleric doesn't have divination spells...
Also DM mentioned that the NPC we killed was stuck in the swamp for 40 years and it seems like the mage can't be found so easily...
Any other ideas that might be helpful?
I was thinking our paladin or cleric pray to their deity but I'm not sure our DM is really into this religion stuff so want to know more ideas before trying it out.
Clerics can change out the spells that they have prepared after every long rest. Maybe speak with animals, summoning some animals to search, fly or levitate to see if they can see something from the air, etc. can help. There are a lot of options and every class in that group has something that can be used to search.

The idea of having animals search for the location is great but I looked up cleric's spells and couldn't find any spell related to summoning animals
There are Augury, Detect Magic, and Detect Evil and Good in the cleric's spell list. Augury of, "If we go this direction will we find the evil wizard?" is a great question to ask!
Rogues are great at searching. The barbarian has survival, which would help with searching the wilderness, doesn't he? The warlock and sorcerer have options depending on which route they took and so does the paladin.
When you killed the expert, you created a puzzle that you need to solve. Talk as a group to see what you can come up with and ask everyone what abilities they have that they think can help.
Fair Point. I am an old school player and just sort of default to the Lawful Good paladin. I should probably work on assuming things. Thank you for that insight.

We have already used Detect Magic and Detect Evil and Good when we were transferred to swamp. DM said that there is a sense of Necrotic Magic but nothing more.
I loved the Augury idea. I think it is what we need. Our Cleric's path is Life Domain can he use Augury after his long rest? (If it's a stupid question excuse my newbieness)
Doing Plain searching won't do us any good since there is a thick mist around the swamp and the NPC himself told us that we will be stuck there forever (right before exploding from a scorching ray ^_^)
You are right about thinking as a group but all 6 of us are really newbies. We don't know what are our actual options and what we are capable so I took it upon myself to ask around for opinions.
Can I ask where the group Paladin was when you ganked a guy for his stuff?? Especially when he had information that:
1. Related to your potential Survival and
2. Pointed you in the direction of an Evil that needed smiting
Well our paladin was out side of shack when everything transpired and we did try to calm the NPC down but he refused our intervention and kept on attacking so we smite his demonic ass back to where the hell he came from.
Also to be fair the NPC himself didn't seem really a Good guy and he was really a though one. Our warlock and paladin got to 0 HP and had to be revived during battle.
Tell your GM you're stuck and would appreciate some help. Unless he thinks the party wondering aimlessly in the swamp forever is fun, he'll help you out. Right now you guys seem a little SOL.

Well the point of RPG games is that you think and solve puzzle on your own. The beautiful thing about D&D is that you have a lot of options and even some unthinkable ones that would get you out.
If we start asking for help for the bad choices we made that would be some sort of cheating and after cheating what's the point of playing? That's why I'm spending time around thinking about all of our options and doing some research and asking around so that we would come out of this mess without help of DM.
I didnt understand did you ask help as player or DM. You dont know where the mage is well. Definately you need to search the swamp area and while searching the area many kind of things can happen. Characters can also find the mage by accident from cave in swamps. Or maybe you find lizardfolk and they have some information about evil mage of the swamps.

I am asking as a player. We don't want to ask our DM about anything :)
What about Augury spell? Isn't it better way other than mindlessly wonder around dangerous swamp?
Also I asked if a Cleric of Life Domain can learn it or not - I would appreciate it if any one could shed some light on that.
Augury is a Cleric spell so any Cleric can prepare it after a long rest. It's not ideal, but it's probably one of your best spells to try to find the evil necromancer mage. Another Cleric spell that will be useful is Locate Object to search for something that a necromancer would have, for example a corpse, although unfortunately for you it won't locate a skeleton, zombie, or other undead.
Rogues can both search for things that don't belong and barbarians can track so your barbarian should be able to recognize any paths through the swamp. You won't be able to see very far, but you can walk and keep searching for clues. I'd have all 6 of you look through your character sheets and look at your skills, class abilities, background features, and spells to see what else you can come up with.
Just because the NPC who you were fighting said something that doesn't mean he was telling the truth. He could have been lying because he was upset that he was about to get killed.

Thank you Tim, You were great. We will be doing exactly in the same manner you have suggested.

By the way we are newbies. Sooo that's that
Clerics can cast divination spells and barbarians might be able to search in the swamp effectively.

Also please note that we are bunch of level 3s
I looked at below link: https://www.5thsrd.org/spellcasting/spell_lists/cleric_spells/
You mentioned other classed can to things too. Could you please mention some of them so that I can research them?

Are you assuming the paladin's alignment and oath? Why's it gotta be the pally who would object?
