I'm trying to put the skill feats from that UA that didn't make it into Xanathar's so my players can use them and I'm running into some logistical problems with adding them. Many of them give you proficiency with a skill or expertise if you are already proficient. So my question is how can I give players the option to gain expertise if they are already proficient?
Should I just add both proficiency and expertise under 'options' should I just put proficiency and expertise in under 'modifiers'?
Alternatively, is there a way for me to add a condition in for expertise so that it only kicks in when they're already proficient?
Someone may come in with a genius solution that helps us both, but I haven't been able to replicate that.
For feats what I've gone instead is set up alternate feats (Eg. you could have Arcana Feat, and Arcana Feat (Proficient)), and for subclasses where such things are relevant I set up options so that the player can pick... As an example for a Darkvision based feature: Has Darkvision, or No Darkvision. Has Darkvision grants them +30ft, and no Darkvision grants 60ft. Unfortunately options aren't so great on feats in the current toolset.

That's a good temporary solution. Is it possible to manually override things like this on the character sheet?
It is! You can ad-hoc proficiencies and expertise directly on the sheet.
