So i'm a relatively new dm and my party just finished lost mines for 5e. My friend agreed to take over storm king campaign after the first week but he asked me to write a hook to bring them together. I created a dungeon in the North which was supposedly the lair of an ancient red dragon. My character (as we switch over dm'ing my character became an npc temporarily) sent our group to this dungeon to recover some items because according to his math the dragon's lifespan had already been passed so it should only contain a few scavengers. Little do they know that a group of cultists worshiping the dragon attempted to transform it into a lich before it died. However the sorcerer screwed up the ritual and instead the bronze dragon meant to be sacrificed was turned while the red dragon's soul got trapped in the phylactery. The bronze dragon who had been tortured for years by the cultists was so terrified of them that he pretended to be the red dragon after the spell and they are all currently occupying the last chamber with an enslaved cyclops (who is equally petrified of the cultists but knows that the dragon is fake). The way i have it set up the dragon and the cyclops are meant to fight the players only as long as the cult master is alive and theyre not going to try to kill them. Luckily for me the players found the spellbook used to make the lich and because of the way i do crits (crit 1=lie) they think the book was used to make an illusion of a dragon and plan to focus the cultist to dispel it. Any tips on how i should run this combat so that its not too easy with them insta-killing the cultist (level 7 sorceror vs level 5 party) or too hard so that they get blown up,
Im fairly new myself, but I've had an occasion with a scheduling issue where only one player showed up. I ran a high level one shot with this player where he had to find a lich in a swarm of zombies. i ran the zombies in swarms of four and had about four groups of zombies total. they had four attacks total and could attack any creature that any one of the zombies could reach. the lich was hidden in one of the groups and casted only area of effect spells or spells that couldn't be traced to the lich. I think that you could do something like this with low-level magic users such as acolytes. if you need any more help just ask, as I've gotten some help from here and I want to give back to the community.
