Greetings all! I was looking over the ship information from Saltmarsh and wanted to clarify something. In the "Actions" section of the warship stat blocks it will say something like, "Fire Ballistas. The warship can fire its ballistas." The warship has two of these, so am I reading it correctly that they can fire both using just one of their three actions? I don't see anything else specifically speaking to it, but I do notice that the same action is written singular for the Sailing Ship, which granted only has one, and plural again for the Galley (which would be 4 firing at once).
It appears that the damage is not cumulative since the stats listed match a single ballista in the DMG, so are my players making multiple attack rolls per action? Or am I missing something from the text that is (very likely) just glaring at me and I won't be able to believe I missed it? I'm wanting to go into our first ship-to-ship combat with all my ducks in a row - or as many of them as I can get!
You can indeed fire all ballistae or mangonels as a single action, but damage against them is tracked individually. It's assumed you have the crew to man all the weapons.
