I want to start out saying that I have no problem with PC death if it happens and the following scenario is kind of just a happy coincidence.
I had a situation sunday where one of my PC's (Warlock) was killed by another follower of his Patron. The intent of the combat was to kill the PC but it wasn't by any means unsurvivable and group sentiment is his choices where what caused his death (I agree, he could have lived if he'd made better choices but that's neither here nor there).
Neither myself nor the PC are overly worried about the death and we've already got a backup PC waiting in the wings BUT I have a situation that I'm just curious how others would handle. The PC was killed by a vampire that would reduce his HP max with each successful bite attack, HOWEVER the PC actually had consumed a potion that was meant to restore CON damage he had previously taken (it was made clear it was not an instant restoration).
To my mind it would be feasible to say that the potion continued to function even in death and that the character would regain that "vitality" that was taken by the vampire causing the PC to be brought back to life (after a suitable amount of time). Now to me this is a one of a kind fluke that I'm only considering because the character happened to have consumed that potion.
I could also take it the other way and bring the PC back as a vampire just change his race to the vampire from the UA MTG. I'm perfectly fine with all three options, I think the surprise resurrection would be the coolest narratively as then the character has to deal with the situation and their patron.
What are some thoughts? (Note I'm not asking if I CAN or should do any of these, I already know I can. I'm just curious about what people think on the options)
Since you can go pretty much any direction that you want to because the PC drank that potion before being killed, work with the player. If the player wants to play the new PC more, then let the PC die or have the PC come back as a nemesis for the party. If the player wants to play the PC that died more, then that potion was a lifesaver and is his one and only second chance. And if that happens the hunting is going to start again almost immediately!
