So I was reading through the Warforged the other day and had a thought. I'm fairly new to D&D so someone may have done this before. What if I was to make a Warforged that had not been activated, no name, no backstory beyond being built and with no background. I am the reason for or reward for an early quest. The party would name me. I would have minimal personality at first beyond my "programming" (granted, to be done properly, this would require more RPing than I think I could manage) Has anyone done this before? What are peoples thoughts?
I did exactly this except the party found me in a lab/workshop (the setting was Faerun).
Many laughs as the Monk accidentally "turned me on" at which point I imprinted on her the same way birds do.
I took the name of the village I was found in (Nightstone) and we went from there.
He had low intelligence and Wisdom to represent the incomplete programming. I was allowed an Int of 6 and total of 28 for the points buy stats which meant I could bump his Charisma to an even so I could make him just adorable. One quest we went on was to search for someone's soul. When the doctor told us that this person had lost their soul I proceeded to start looking down the back of the chest of draws and under the bed.
I played him as a gentle giant, that was until shit hit the fan and someone attacked the monk at which point I turned from being Lenny (Of Mice and Men) into the Terminator.
Many ideas that require some thought, puzzles, traps or hazards etc I had as a player were adopted as the wizard@s seeing as none of us IRL have an int of 20, either that or I just bumbled into the correct course of action.
Absolutely great fun though you do have to be careful not to go full Lawful stupid too often. Have you DM ask you about how you would react in certain situations. One example our DM asked was what I would do if I saw someone stealing from a fruit merchant. No reaction as I have no concept of property. What about the merchant spotting the street urchin and chastising him for stealing. Well now the little one is being hurt, I protect people that are being hurt at which point I knock 7 shades out of the merchant and it moves on from there.
Any time you take a very setting specific race line warforged out of the setting they were written for, you can do whatever you want if your DM allows it. Outside of Eberron, you can toss every piece of lore associated with the warforged out the window. So, your idea would work perfectly fine. (Just remember to get your DM's ok to play one.)
I once played a warforged hexblade, that had no in world background (shunted into Gameworld though a portal from ebberon that reset their systems). They were their own patron and the warlock ability gains were just subsystems resetting.
Playing Warforged that had just been activated is always fun. you are basically playing a small child that is seeing the world for the first time. Do stupid things, do things that people would find strange, pick up a goblin and think it's a puppy. Embrace the fact you will be the comic relief of the group but you can always grow and learn over the course of the game
I have a warforged that is based on Alphonse from Fullmetal Alchemist his soul was stolen to animate a warforged by a wizard that wants to be immortal but doesn't want to be a Lich. But he doesn't remember being human yet. As the campaign goes on he will recover those and then decide if he wants to get his body back.

Thanks guys. I think this is something I will try when I am a little more experienced.
