I am curious if you and your party came across a fortification or keep that was abandoned, one that you decided to build up and help stabilize the region. We have some structures there, and you can build this up... what are the buildings or structures you would build to help support a Keep and the surrounding region...
We have decided to start with a Tavern/Inn, then a Shrine, then build up a Forge (already basic forge here)… It is a military base mostly, already barracks and stables, not much else.
Forge first. Kitchen next. Shrine if all the employees are the same religion unless you have generic shrine. Farmer, hunter, next. opps. Mason very very first to make sure the keep is stable. The 1E DMG had some nice ideas on keep costs. Matt Coleville had a Stronghold book. I bought it but since I only do Adventure league I have not read it.
Complications. Oops. Did you get a deed from that dead orc. Do you own the deed to the keep and land? Do those nasty adventurers still believe the keep is the lair of the evil bandit Chris? Water rights? Lumber rights? Tax rights? Free service rights?
The Strongholds book from Matt Coleville is good, but nothing about building strongholds, tbh. Yeah, I should make sure we get the deed to the land, and what not... and rights if my DM will deal with that much detail on it. Kitchen likely should be up there for an upgrade too, there is one basic in the Barracks area... The surrounding lands have farms and such, but they are not all in use as the area has not be used much in recent history. Are there any other buildings, I was thinking like an Orphanage or Support Center for surrounding populace that need a safe place for a while.
Armorer and armoury. Weapon smith or treat as a forge expansion. Just how into this is up to you. If you can get them, Life in a Medieval Castle, Life in a Medieval Village. Life in a Medieval etc by Frances Gies can be read and mined for ideas. Also any castle/medieval god games can be mined for ideas.
As a DM, I would throw a mix at you. Accounting jobs -hey the income is falling short this month go on an adventure just to pay for the leaky roof. Regular adventure and you leave some npc in charge. Adventure having to with the keep. This can be going to hire workers, Ankheg in the north forty, bandits raiding the farms.

Thanks for any ideas.
