I think there are a few good options here. First the material componet still gets expended, as well as the spell slot. This would lead the caster to a couple different conculsions based how how you want to tell the story.
1) The spell fizzled somehow.
2) The caster knows it was counterspelled, but not by who.
I think that "your spell failed halfway through because someone messed with its casting" would be fairly obvious, so I'd tell the player, "Your character's attempt to cast was counterspelled, but you didn't see anyone casting any spell."

Can someone explain why this works?
If the first spell has material components does the first spell caster know the spell was countered?
If the first spell caster doesn't know then how does one explain the countered spell.
I guess maybe you could know the spell failed but not know why... It "just fizzles."
WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
