O k a y, so, I made a character. I'm kinda proud of them, but I don't know if they're a carbon copy of another character.
The character I made is a hobgoblin named Risk. His class is a fighter, subclass being a battle master. To dumb down his entire life story that I wrote down at like 4am:
Risk is a hobgoblin that strayed away from his band of delinquents to form his own band of delinquents since he felt he didn't get enough praise for his service. Because he couldn't find anyone willing to join up with him because of his race's notoriety, he just kind of joined an adventurer's league guild in an attempt to befriend some people out of loneliness, though he'll never state this aloud. He's not political, but if he was? He'd probably be an anarchist. His main method of fighting is with a longsword, which he has a surprising affinity with. He also carries around a heavy crossbow, although his aim is terrible. Risk uses his fighting prowess to defend others, preferring to intercept attacks against his allies rather than protecting himself. He acts all high and mighty, but that's only 'cause he's a show off. He hates being seen as weak, as most hobgoblins do. He's not exactly the brightest soul in the world, which kinda sets him apart from his smarter kin. He also has an innate fear of dogs. Specifically big dogs. Oh, and large bodies of water.
Essentially, he's got the "tough guy with a heart of gold" cliche going for him. See, the thing is, I based this character off of Giovanni Potage, a character from an animated series called 'Epithet Erased'. Giovanni is this over-the-top, bombastic personality that shows off whenever he can. He formed his own 'band' of...well, not-so evil compadres for the sake of wholesome friendship. He's also not exactly the brightest soul and acts very simiarly to Risk. What I'm trying to say is that I very much so made Risk similiar to Giovanni Potage. Select things are different about them, though I don't want to feel like I'm just making a carbon copy fantasy version of Giovanni.
What do you think? Is this copying, or is it just inspiration? Sorry about this bad formatting, I literally just woke up. Yes, I know, 11am is late-- Blame my laziness. P.S: I know that this character probably wouldn't be eligible to use in a serious-type campaign. I actually don't /have/ a party right now, so I'm just making characters left right and center for the sake of it. So. Y e a h.

"I don't always do things right, and I don't always do things smart, and I don't always do a character voice, but whatever I do, I find joy in it. Because at the end of the day, that's all you got. It's looking back on the joy you had, and the joy you found, and the joy you gave other people." -->Merle Highchurch, The Adventure Zone: Balance.
I guess so, yeah. Main problem, if anything, is me criticizing myself. I don't know when actually playing the character will come into fruition, but I sure can't wait--

Huh. Yeah, you're right! I was worried 'bout him being a mirror image of another character, but...Yeah, I'd say the more I interact with the world and fellow PC's as said characters, the more he'll be shaped into his own fully-realized creation. Thanks the confidence boost!

Pshh,, that's great! But oh boy, don't even get me started on first characters...Those were the days of like,, "Pandemika Lightsworn, daughter of the grand warlock Sasseneid"...
Seriously, the first days of character-making were r e a l l y bad, edginess to the max--
But I mean, c'mon, who hasn't taken inspiration from LoTr. Also, isn't Arioch the duke of chaos or something like that-?

I've definitely watched the movies, and they do the fantasy world justice. I've yet to read the books though, since I get sore eyes when I try to read for too long. Which is a regret I have. Those are surely some w a c k stats, though the illustrations are pretty neat. Haven't played anything before D&D 3e, though just from looking at that reference sheet, you can really tell it's different!

We have a saying here, roughly translates as “better well stolen than badly made up”. I’m not going to claim that to be an absolute truth, but there’s something to it at least.

I'll take that saying to heart then, so thanks for that!

It sounds like an interesting read, which means it'd definitely make a decent movie. I might have to look into Arioch for some uses in an up and coming campaign I'm writing too, so thanks for that idea-

D&D has a long and storied history of the creators seeing stuff they liked in books and movies and integrating them into the game. Nothing to be ashamed of, I actually encourage outright stealing/copying the things that inspire you. You'll find that the simple act of playing will also begin to mold your 'stolen' character into something more and more unique and original the more you play it.
Well hey, thanks for that! Soon as I find a game to pop this dude into, I'll try my best to make him more original as the campaign goes on! But thanks for the words of encouragement either way.

A conscious effort isn't even a requirement (though do whatever you want) . Just enjoy yourself, and it'll just happen as you play and make choices as your character. Have fun!

As long as it's not a bounty hunter with a helmet like Boba Fett whose name is literally Boba Fett, you are fine :D
For reference, search Farador D&D ;-)
