It's been year that we have been waiting for this. Seemingly it should be very simple to create a whip that does 2d4 damage instead of the normal 1d4. Currently any additional damage is shown outside of the normal damage, making it difficult to roll in browser. This is especially annoying when playing on a VTT and not being able to link your rolls over like with everything else. Is there a reason for this? Is there a fix?

The reason is that from a homebrew aspect, we only get access to what can be mirrored in official content. I would wager this is because it's only been developed and coded that way.
I think you can make something from scratch or copy another weapons damage and just change the name and reach. I'm pretty sure you can add regular damage anyway though, it's been too long for me to remember.
For now, to get a Whip that does 2d4 damage, you can homebrew a magic item weapon "Great Whip" (or whatever) based on the Doubled-Bladed Scimitar, and add the following Modifiers:
Weapon Property - Finesse
Weapon Property - Reach
Ignore Weapon Property - Two-Handed (unless you want the whip to be two-handed)

For custom basic weapons I find this is the best method to get what we want at the moment. Clicking create "manage custom" on the action tab will get you here. Then you create it right on the character sheet.
You get your rollable area that you can send to VTT's and you have more customization options with regards to dice type etc. If you need to track it in your inventory add a custom item there as well.
Another benefit is how quick they are to setup compared to the homebrew system (and no lag between changes). I still would like the ability to set up permanent items that I know will come up more than once but this works for me in the mean time.

This is nice! Will take a little more work to go in and mess around with my players' character sheet, but its something. Thank you!
I’ve tried this and it doesn’t seem to do anything to my weapons. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I want to have a custom spear that rolls 1d6 (normal) and 1d10. Is that possible?

Is there another weapon that has 2d4 damage? If so, then you can use that and customise it's name to "Big Whip"

Would love to see the ability to homebrew basic weapons, yeh can just make them magical and say they aren't magical.. but.. bleh
You can also add additional damage dice on top of the standard one but yeah. It's annoying that you can't just edit the base damage dice.

No, it is not possible.
