It turns out, dire wolves exist in reallife. Their scientific name is, Canis dirus.
They flourished in North America, toward the end of the Ice Age (the Pleistocene Epoch ending roughly 12000 years ago, before the Paleolithic Period of the Holocene Epoch).
Genetically the dire wolves are cousins to the wolves of today, said to be related similar to how human relates to bonobo/chimpanzee. Today species, gray wolves, dogs, coyotes, jackals, etcetera, are more closely related to each other, and are thought to be able to crossbreed with each other, whereas the dire wolves are different branch of the Canis family and probably could not interbreed with them.
The dire wolves originated in North America, whereas the gray wolves originated in Eurasia and more recently arrived in North America.
They are about human size, 90 kg, 1.6 m length, 85 cm at shoulders.
The Norman duke, Rolo: his nickname in Old Norse is Ganga-hrólfr, "Walking Hrólfr" because he was too big for the horses, and had to walk behind those smaller people who could ride horses.
Here is an other artists depiction of the dire wolf. Here dire wolves compete with gray wolves, over a bison. Since it is now clear that the dire wolf is genetically less related to a gray wolf, here it appears more reddish.

Well, existed. A lot of critters have some sort of dire version in their evolutionary tree.

o/ \🥛🍪 Hey, take care of yourself alright?
So would that mean that the horses that we know and use today are actually dire horses?

I did know, actually. Dire animals make a great low-level enemy option in prehistoric-themed areas!

For comparison, the size of the dire wolf is similar to the larger specimens of the great dane breeds of dog.
