So I am in a DnD campaign and my DM has us do a door puzzle with a few symbols as the "code". Is there a type of door alphabet for symbols or is it just guessing?
Ps: If this is in the wrong discussion area, please tell me. I will change if so.
Door Alphabet? I am going to need a little more expansion on that concept because i don't think i understand.

He/Him. Loooooooooong time Player. The Dark days of the THAC0 system are behind us.

There’s not been anything official in a long time. In 1 or 2 e I remember a published dwarven and elven alphabet. But really, it sounds more like this is a puzzle the DM expects the players to solve. If you really get stuck, have someone with a high int or wis score ask to make a roll for at least a clue, since a 20 int wizard should be able to solve it pretty quickly.
Okay, thank you. Could you help me decode the code though?
Imagine a door with symbols kind of like a tic tac toe board. To the top right, there is a star. In the middle, there is a dragon talon/claw. Top left, their is a dragon skull. I have spent 1 week trying to find ways to get into the room. (We can't ram through the door as it is an enchanted crypt so anything we throw at it is absorbed.)
Are you sure you need to get in now? You might be supposed to return later, mayber with those things. (obviously not an actual star, but a representation or something)
Do the symbols move? Do they light up when you touch them? Did you find them elsewhere and have to place them onto the door? There are so many possibilities, but seriously, if the DM presented the puzzle to you, his players, you should figure it out in-game with the other players. More specifically your characters. Going online for the answers or asking others is like taking a test and going online to find the answers because you didn't do the homework.

Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
I completely understand, but he hasn't told us anything other than the symbols and we haven't been able to do anything to figure things out. I have asked other people in the campaign but no one has any idea of what it could be. I have tried figuring it out on my own but there is no spell I can do that relates to that, nobody has any item relating to that and 3 people have already died in the first session figuring things out.
Either there are clues nearby, you can roll for hints, you've missed out some crucial context, or the DM has a solution in his head that makes sense to him but is so esoteric that it's impossible for anyone without the solution to figure it out. What you've given so far is pretty insolvable.
First thing I'd do is ask the DM out of character - are you meant to be looking for clues in the game? Can you ask for hints, possibly via Intelligence rolls? Do you have all the information to solve it? Basically, ask them what the way forward is to solving it. Generally, DMs don't want you stick there either, so they'll be willing to give you pointers. If my players get stuck at a certain point and aren't getting it, I'll give them pointers to help the game go forward.
The only thing I can think of is dragon related spells, but it seems you're low level and probably won't have access to many and I'm not sure of any anyway.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

I would bet against it. Search for patterns, you're (probably) thinking along the wrong lines.
Sorry. I mean like certain symbols are substitutes for letters/ words kind of like ASL.

The 2014 phb had those. I'm not sure whether they're in the 2024 phb.

Do any of those hold any significance to you? (like, have you fought a dragon?)
Apparently, we should fight a dragon soon enough but this is just the start of the campaign.

There is no other way to go with the campaign sadly. So basically just try to figure out what symbols mean by asking the DM would be our best move huh
Oh, thanks for the correction. I’d forgotten about that.
