Helloi need help with the beginning of my campaign. the background is basically an evil tyrant king takes over a land before the characters were born and where i sorta want the story to go is i want them to try and overthrow the king. i dont wanna railroad them, but i wanna convince them to. how would i start the campaign in a way that would make them grow to hate the king slowly to the point where they gather allies and try to overthrow him?
First off, put this in story and lore or,Dungeon masters only.
Second,I ran a campaign that was this 5 times over so this should not be to hard.Start by showing them either a gruesome act(an wrongful execution,a growing war threat,a crashing ecomony) explain why this is bad (or just shove in their face).Hooking them up to a group of rebels is a good idea in general and can be great for explaining why the tyrant is terrible.Throw more crappy events at them until they start working towards beating this guy up.
I would say start with small quest for locals, peasant asking help against ghoul, wild creature in the wood frightening the local merchant etc... but during those mission, include hints, or scene that show the local authority cruelty.
For example, when the party comes back from a quest with a peasant, make them come back when a few guards are forcing the family to pay taxes, so much so that they don't even have money to pay the party after.
The key is to steadily ramp up how much this king affects what your players are doing.
If your players go through levels 1-5 and their quests are not affected by the evil king, then they aren't going to jump at the opportunity to have a crack at him.
I think you need to work out some bigger details before you get to the nitty-gritty stuff.
Why did the evil king take over?
What makes him evil?
how does this king affect the land?
how does this king affect the characters?
What will happen after they go after the King?
How will they get the king?
So, for example: If they are asked by a farmer to just pop up to the castle and kill the king, they will probably think "Hm, no, because we'll be killed". If they are approached by the true heir to the throne, and asked to infiltrate the castle and destroy the magic orb that the population see the tyrant as a phony, then that might sound better. Give them a clear goal for deposing the king and putting the nice guy on the throne to save the kingdom. If the king has been screwing with them the whole time, then they will jump at the chance.
