Hey guys, Long story short my players are getting chance to do some rolling to craft some specific home brew items. I've listed the mechanics of how the rolling will work below, and open to feedback on that, but primarily looking for some feedback on the items themselves. Power differences, Coolness, tweaks/ideas, etc. Thanks in advance!
I know rolls for crafting will vastly change power level, but this is kind of my targets i'm aiming for on the "power rolls". NAT1s will be weaker than NAT20s for sure, but still cool and iconic unqiue abilities. My goal for power targets is like
NAT 1 - Unique Green magic level 2-10 - Blue Power Level 11-19 Powerful Blue borderline Purple 20 - Purple or better
Mechanics: Player Picks: 1.) The "ITEM" you want to craft. This should be a generic base item common to D&D. Like "2-handed sword", "Long Bow", "Full Plate Armor", "Studded Leather", "Bracers", "Boots", etc…
2.) The "Power Word" - This is a single word. Must be a VERB. I am going to come up with the mechnics of the word, so don’t get your heart set on a specific mechanic, its wild magic, results unpredictable. This might be a word like "Burn", "Freeze", "Fly", "Flee", etc. ANY verb is allowed. Be creative :-D
3.) An assistant. This must be an NPC, and cant be Jimmy or Teresa (They are busy working the crafting stations and facilitating the ritual) This can either be someone who has proficiencies in crafting or arcana to help with crafting rolls, or maybe more thematic to help impact the build like a Fire Elemental to increase the burn damage or apply a lingering burn effect or an master swordsman to help apply a manuver to the weapon. I will also be lineiate here, so be creative and talk to me about what you hope to impact on this. Again, I wont disclosue specific mechanics as it is intended to be wild magic outcomes, but would def entertain on this item what you are hoping to accomplish with your assistant. The assistant will be less impactful than the power word, but should help "impact" and "customize" with the power word.
Lastly, I want to share some of the mechanics. While you don’t need to know this as the player making your decision, for those who are curious, this is how I plan to do the crafting. My intention is that the player is very involved in the crafting (you will be rolling, lots) that will determin the final item. The item will take 3 properties. Magic Infusion (Passive bonus, Based primary off the item "type"), Item Quality (Will affect the "frequency of the trigger". On a weapon this MIGHT be something like a Nat1 - "On CRITICAL Hit do….." where a NAT 20 might be "On EVERY Hit do……") Enchantment Effect - This is based on the command word and determins the POWER level of what happens when the "trigger" is met. Each of these properties will take a total of two rolls - a "Skill Roll" and a "Power Roll". First for the Skill Roll, ill roll a 1d4 to create a "target" number. This is me simulating the timing of Jimmy or Teresa. Next, you will roll a 1d4 wanting to hit the same number I did. This is how well your character "aligned" with the crafter, imagine a video game where there is a meter that bounces back and forth with you wanting to hit right in the middle. Hitting the target exact (what I rolled) will give you proficiency on the Power Roll, while missing the target by more than 1 will give you disadvantage on the power roll. The power roll will be a d20 with the roll landing on a table I have populated beforehand specific for your item. Each pair of rolls will have one of the rolls focusing on Smithing Proficiency while the other will focus on Arcana Proficiency.
