As per the entries for a "boomerang" this should(PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU AGREE) be the correct, non-magical (mundane, normal, standard), item "stat block", my additions in bold red:
Weight is set to 1lb, if you have held a "returning" (vs a "non-returning" at 5 pounds, up to 10 pounds, See here & here) boomerang this is about right
Cost is set to 2 gp, 1:1 a light hammer (same damage, 2x the range ratings & returns if it misses, but not a "melee weapon" or "light")
Thrown, as this is a "thrown weapon", but not finesse, as it is not present on magical item "parent"
Boomerang,
Type: Simple Ranged Weapon Cost: 2 gpWeight: 1 lb
The boomerang is a ranged weapon, and any creature proficient with the javelin is also proficient with this weapon.
Special: On a miss, the boomerang returns to the thrower's hand.
Why would a proficiency in javelin give you proficiency in the boomerang? They have very different throwing techniques. Also, boomerangs weigh about 4-5 lbs., even the returning ones.
Random fun fact: boomerangs have the same flight patterns in zero gravity as they do on Earth!
Why does the boomerang not have the thrown property when the correct way to use it is by throwing? The dart, which is also a ranged weapon, has the thrown property.

THIS! It may seem nit-picky, but now it is actually affecting my character build. I am trying to infuse a boomerang with the returning weapon infusion (the boomerang only returns on a miss as it is currently written) as an Artificer, but since it technically isn't listed as a thrown weapon I have to remember that in my head. This seems like it should be a simple fix.

Because that’s what the magic item says, practicalities be damned :p
it’ll be a simplicity thing as they aren’t a core piece of equipment.
back on topic: I’d probably make them slightly cheaper. Likely down to 2 gp or something similar
Please take a look at my homebrewed Spells, Magic Items, and Subclasses. Any feedback appreciated.
It’s a simple ranged weapon, most classes will have proficiency with it anyway. And I agree with 5g being a bit much.

SAMESAMESAME
Edited Item cost changed to 2gp to reflect community suggestions.
added "special" tag to returning on a miss, and "Thrown" tag (is this a thrown ranged weapon)
Other notes:
Boomerangs are "improvised melee weapons" RAW, like hitting someone with a crossbow in melee
RAW they are simple ranged weapons, THEY ARE NOT simple melee weapons with the thrown property
why "javelin"? because dart would be "too simple", and open use to classes that, imho, RAW are not intended to use such weapons
and the OG source item says the same text
