With OneDnD tying ability score increases to backgrounds instead of races, it’s brought up the idea of how to handle the situation of keeping these bonuses, while still adding character variety. So I’m here to throw out an idea I had a few hours ago as to how it could be handled;
I still think every race should get the choice of +2 and +1 or +1 +1 and +1, but i was inspired for this idea by OneDnD itself when it included suggested spells for certain classes. There could be suggested ability score increases for races given in a similar manner.
example: “Most Goliath societies hold great value in their rugged, physically-demanding sports, with many Goliath children being taught and encouraged to play from a young age to one day grow resilient and mighty. Strength and Constitution are recommended ability score increases for Goliaths.”
this has probably already been done somewhere and is more of a middle ground between tying them into backgrounds and having them be suggested in addition to the rules in Tashas. And I’m sure most people already just put the increases wherever they want anyway. Which is what I actually do.
Hey so I totally forgot the other part of this. I don’t like ability score decreases being tied to races but I’ve seen a lot of older players who enjoy them. Just have the blurb say something like; “kobolds are known for their speed and craftiness, slinking around the dark corners of the labyrinthine mines they call home, but tend to lack in physical power. Dexterity and wisdom are recommended to be prioritized when choosing ability scores, and strength is recommended to be lowered to fit the common Kobold archetype.”
