I’m making a new race called an Omsosaa, link below, and I need help making a home-brew spell it can get at level five.
The Half angel/half demon raises its finger, pointing at the red dragon and mutters the words ‘Dirk-Hwul’. A radiant light falls from the sky, hitting the beast, while a beam of blackness rises from his feet. I look at my ally and see his eyes have changed. On black and one white.
This spell does 1d8 radiant and 1d8 necrotic damage. It also heals a party member hit points equal to 1/4 of the damage dealt. What do you think?
Spells received as a racial trait at character level 5 are always 2nd level spells, so that's what this should be compared to for balance.
Taken individually, each part of your spell is generally fine on its own. But taken all together, this one spell does everything. It's like casting Inflict Wounds with range, Healing Word, Bless, and Bane all in one action. Each is slightly weakened, but being able to deal damage, heal, buff, and debuff all with one spell makes it one of the most useful 2nd level spell there is. If this spell was available to Clerics. I can't see why anyone would cast anything else.
There is also a lot of mechanical details to work out. Does it use a spell attack roll? A saving throw? Or does it automatically work? If the target saves, do they take half damage? Do the other effects still happen? Does the creature hit with Bane make a save? Do the Bless and Bane effects require concentration? If they do, it would mean you can't cast this spell again without losing them, which might be a good thing.
Are you going to allow any Divine caster to take this spell as normal? Or will it only ever be cast once a day by members of this one race?
Personally I think it's trying to be too much at once. And it needs some work on the details. But if you like it, and it won't imbalance your own game, then by all means go for it.
A fifth level spell (Spell Level) would never normally be given to a 5th level character (Class Level). Racial traits given at character level 5 are always 2nd level spells. A full spellcaster has to be level 9 to even learn a 5th level spell normally. But again, if balance and the normal conventions aren't a concern, do what you want.
I'm terrible with coming up with names for things, so I'm sorry I can't help there.
