I hate when a player comes up with a clever idea and wants to use a skill to resolve it. As soon as the other players hear it they all say " I do the same, me too, I want to!" This is usually because everyone wants to be the one who succeeds ( mostly young players). The end result is that the group gets 5 tries at the same action and the one who succeeds gets a dopamine hit ( even if he/she isn't the one who had the original idea) while the original player who thought of it gets demotivated because someone else gets all his praise.
I had an idea. " when doing skill based actions during a game . If a player comes up with an action he/she would like to do the other players are not allowed to simply "do the same action " ie. Essentially giving a group multiple tries at the same action . This also ensures that the character who performed the action doesn't have his cleverness minimized by a player who just "I do what he does " and gets success. I would also recommend you talk about ideas more before jumping into skill actions. See who is best at certain skills and work as a team.
If a action fails but you want to try again simply come at the problem from a different angle ie. Use a different skill to achieve the same result.

Alright, SO, I myself, not a great DM, but I copy what good DMs i have played with and for have done:
What they do, is they ask all the characters what they want to do. every single one, until they all provide an answer. Then they resolve the things. This cuts down on players going "OH! I want to d0o that too" No, you can't, you're already checking a bookshelf, or you're standing watch.
Now this isn't perfect, sometimes their answers will be vague enough to where maybe they 8could* you prod them mroe as a DM by going :How would you like to do this?" or "What are you doing to do that?" This makes their "action" more engaging to where its like "no, you don't really see this you're doing your thing, or you're off over there you wouldn't see or hear it" etc.
NOW, another... method: Once more than 2 people do it, have everyone roll, and its now a "Group Skill check" Take the average of all the players' roll and its either pass or fail.
ANOTHER further option: just straight tell them, "no. you cannot. BUT you can help SO AND SO do it, and they will do it at advantage"
these are 3 different options.
(I'm a bad DM because my prepwork is lacking because I don't have "DM free time" to prep) Much love and respect to DMs
