First thing to get out of the way, no, this isn't just double proficiency, and this is 5E. I was more thinking a master utilising their chosen weapon to the utmost fullest. With that out of the way the concept.
I have always found weapons to be very boring or gamey. Some weapons are just worse and have very little reason to use. I wanted to A) Introduce weapons proficiencies. Instead of getting a weapon category of simple or Martial, I had thought about choosing weapon types, like axe and sword to get proficeny in, and B) an expertise system to make each weapon feel better.
The proficiencies would just be categorizing weapons and balancing who gets how many proficiencies. Something like only having simple proficiency gives you one weapon proficiency and a Martial proficiency turns into two off the bat.
Now the expertise is the interesting part. There might be better homebrew out there that does this, and I would love to have that. Expertise can be gained in a few house rule ways, but are unimportant. Only one can be gained, maybe, and it gives a dedicated ability. Like a flail is able to attack creatures with a shield or half cover without adding that to their ac, or a rapier can reaction parry like in defensive duelist.
I had also thought about adding that light weapons can attack an extra time on top of the duel wield perk, and heavy weapons can instead deal bludgeoning if they couldn’t already.
I just want to change weapons because they feel so neglected in 5e. Any pointers, ideas, or other words would be appreciated. I just wanted to hear some ideas about this.
