Hey everyone. I'm working on a homebrew magic pistol and would love any feedback or suggestions. I'm trying to make it powerful and interesting while staying balanced (y'know, like all homebrew).
Name: Firebolt Pistol
Hit: +4
Damage (Range): 1d10 (60/120), dex save on long-range instead of disadvantage.
Save DC: (not sure on this one. Would love suggestions)
Requirements: Attunement (and proficiency?)
Description: This magically constructed weapon emits what is basically the Fire Bolt cantrip instead of projectiles and does not require reloading. However, the catalyst chamber can overheat if fired too rapidly.
Overheat: The Firebolt Pistol can be fired once per turn without overheating. If the pistol is fired twice in one turn it will overheat, taking one full turn to cool, and will cause 1d4 fire damage to the user unless it is dropped (picking up the pistol requires an action). If the pistol is fired while overheated, the third shot will do 8d6 fire/thunder damage (basically the 3rd lvl Fireball spell) instead to both the target and the user (same dmg roll for both, and both make a Dex save). The weapon will then need to be repaired before being used again.

These seems like a major downgrade for a relatively small bonus,But otherwise it's good if formatted really awkward.

You could make it that it deals additional fire damage the more it is shot consecutively (capping out at some point) without damaging the user
