I homebrewed a shadow monk ability for my character to give to my dm, he wants to give us abilities/magic items that scale with our character and he let me design mine. Please use this and give me feedback.
Dormant state As long as the user has at least 1 remaining shadow ki point they can summon any monk weapon in a shadowy form that does necrotic damage in place of the original type Any monk weapon created has a +1 to damage and attack rolls For every 2 shadow Ki points spent the necrotic damage spent inceases by 1 of your martial arts die.
Awoken state Any monk weapon created now has +2 to damage and attack rolls The user can spend 3 shadow ki points to do Shadow Mimicry - when in a range of at least 60ft. you can extend your shadow to an enemy’s and force them to make a str save against your ki save dc. On a fail the enemy is forced to mimic your actions until the end of your next turn and must roll a new saving throw.
Exalted state Any monk weapon created has +3 to damage and attack rolls
For context: shadow ki are ki points created when you spend regular ki. But they can only be used for shadow ki abilities shown above.
My character is a monk (14) rogue(6) multiclass (currently at level) so i designed this with the fact that I'll have only 14 total ki points in mind and therefore 14 shadow ki points.
Use 1 ki point to summon any monk weapon in a shadowy form that does magical damage of that weapons type. This effect lasts for 10 minutes. Level 5 you roll 2 hit dice, 3 at level 11 and 4 at level 17.
I feel as a DM you've made something that could potentially unbalance the game, especially as I would need to judge what the other PC's had come up with as well. Also you don't want to have something which is going to override you using the abilities that actually come with your class, they're great abilities (I've played that sub class). I'd use a cantrip which levels up as the basis for each PC ability, which is what my suggestion is based on.
