okay so i want to make my campaigns big bad a mindflayer turned lich, who's enslaved followers are draining the sun to basically make them a god of sorts. anyone have any ideas for abilities and stuff i could give them, aside from standard mindflayer and lich stuff? how do i make this enemy actually as scary in an encounter as i want to build them up to be? any suggestions appreciated
Take the mind flayer's stats, add them to the lich's stats, throw in some stuff from the solar, possibly add the balor's Fire Aura, maybe even toss in some stuff from the Way of the Sun Soul. Also, give it some nasty little minions.
Edit: Also, make it a 20th-level wizard, with class features. Spell Mastery shield and some really nasty 2nd-level spell.
Or you could use the illithilich stats from the VGTM and throw in radiant balor aura like matthias said, and also add radiant immunity, healing, and spells like sunburst/guiding bolt.
Honestly, the words Mindflayer and Lich being used to describe the same creature is terrifying in and of itself.
I think seeding fear in the characters about this BBEG would be wonderfully terrible.
Maybe at first it's not clear so the plots indicate two potential BBEG's. A mindflayer causing all kinds of outsider strange and issues, and a lich working in the same area creating dangerous undead arcana and whatnot. Those could be the seeds within your plots and the BBEG might even be purposefully putting forward two different identities that seem to almost be at odds with each other (but are part of the super intelligent, super malicious plan).
Imagine the slow growing horror in the character's minds as the two plotlines are discovered to intersect far too often. Almost in a coordinated fashion. Almost as if the two are one. Almost as if.... Hey is that... is... that a Mindflayer Zombie??? OMG OMG RUN! We are up against an undead mindflayer!!!
BRB, going to do some work on this new BBEG idea in my campaign... ;)
There is too much radiant damage there. You would need to go narcotic, due to the lich not being alive. Radiant is reserved for holy creatures, and I believe there is nothing holy about a lich.
I have noticed that even with a big powerful creature you can still beat it with the right number and class of adventurers, so I would go with numbers. I would make the pet of this Mindflayer Lich an undead Beholder or two of them rather than one. That would scare the pants off any adventurer.

Radiant energy is just divine power. The Lich in question seems to want to enact some ritual, stealing divine power for itself in order to clumsily ascend to godhood. If Vecna can be a lich who became a god (a being made of divine energy), then this lich shouldn't have any issues either. The Lich, statistically, isn't vulnerable to Radiant damage.

A Lich in essence is an undead mage of sorts, correct? Or has lore of a Lich changed. If not, the radiant damage or in take of this radiant energy would be more than enough to obliterate it. Again, that is if the Lore of a Lich has not changed. Come doesn't to this Divine power or energy is made to kill undead.

No, the lore of radiant damage and undead has changed.

Only shadows and vampires are paticularly vulnerable. Liches are powerful arcanes who trap the soul in a box and put it under their bed. Radiant is commonly used to represent divine damage for some people, but I usually treat it as just light damage, like how it really should be.
