https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/203902-sentinel. This is a fun race I made. I intend for these thing to be enemies (so I made a stat block for them) because I allowed one player to be a Medusa. She is not long for this world if you read through this thing. I want opinions on how balanced this race is as well as if it would be fun. Thanks in advance!
Calling termination strike an unarmed attack will have consequences for Monks, who can use them with Martial Artists, not sure if intended.
Being able to heal through a cantrip is very discouraged.
The "constructed nature" and "Sentinel's rest" feature make it unclear how they are supposed to long rest.
The Termination Protocol isn't very clear: what happens if the creature's CR higher than my level ? Am I considered to have failed the saving throw, or do i just not like it ? The extra damage seems superfluous.
The Beam Weapon is way above similar feature, see the Dragonborn's breath for examples.
The thrusters are fun in theory, but unsure how it works. As written, I should be able to spend my action to start, then instantly land, burning no fuel, but doing 11 damage to everyone around me, with no save or attack roll. This isn't much at later levels, but is significant at low lv.
This is above average as a race, and would be playable without the "going berserk on monstrosities" bit.
But if you intend for them to be ennemies, you should build an enemy, even if some features of the monsters block don't make it into the playable race. That's ok.
They are supposed to long rest like normal, but a creature can choose to repair them and give them a long rest in 3 hours while taking 1 level of exhaustion. maybe mending heals them by just 1d4 because that's the only spell I can think of that would allow for healing for them. The extra damage on monstrosities is because the sentinels were built SPECIFICALLY to kill them, so they do more damage to them. If the creature is stronger than you, you just don't like it and for the purposes of some abilities and spells, you are considered aggressive towards it. If you want to do the decent damage you must have spent at least 1 turn flying. Is there anything I should remove?
I understand the idea behind the bonus damage, but it seems over the top to me. I would look at the Favored Enemy feature of the ranger class (or even better, the revised ranger) for inspiration/wording. This is already tantamount to giving a class feature to a race, for free, so this shouldn't be underestimated.
I believe it has been stated that you can only gain the benefit of a long rest once per day, so that feature would only allow to "quicken" the short rest. Which is probably what makes it balanced. Otherwise, a cleric Sentinel could gain a long rest benefit, then spend a 5th lv spell slot and 100gp to cast greater restoration and remove the exhaustion level on the other character.
If this is meant to be a PC race, I don't think there should be a mechanic to dictate player behaviour. If the player choose such a race, they should probably hate monstrosities anyway. This also gives information as to the CR of the target, which the player shouldn't have access to.
As for healing, if this is meant to be a playable race, regular healing spells should work. Just say that a soul has been bound to the construct. If it's only a computer with an AI, I'd argue that we're outside the domain of a playable. But that's just my opinion.
