So I am making a classes system that allows players to build their own class, I really like this idea and decided to build it into D&D Beyond to make it easy for my players to keep track of everything. I had a few issues, namely, there is no way to build a custom class. I worked around this given that this campaign won't have magic and the warlock makes a great all-around nothing class if you remove spells. They get simple weapons and light armor, it was kinda perfect! So I broke out all of the class features into primary and secondary features and started building them as feats so my players could just manage their abilities through the manage feats option on the character sheet. This was actually working out pretty good until I hit few class features that I am not sure if I can replicate. Currently, I have only done levels 1-5 of martial based classes
Can you make a homebrew feat that works like Fight Style Class Ability? I can't seem to figure it out, I can add the options but I don't know how to make it so your chosen options control what modifiers you get. Or do I really have to create a feat for each fighting style?
Can you make a homebrew feat that works like martial arts? I found a way to change the unarmed damage die, but this seems to be a one time effect, not something I can control by level. It will also not let me say Str or Dex and instead forces me to use one or the other. Unlike the fighting style option above, I really want to try and avoid creating a feat for each damage die.
Can you make a homebrew feat that will let you choose between constitution or wisdom and then change your base armor class calculation off of that choice or is this similar to fighting style where I'll have to make a feat for each option?
Unfortunately, I have no idea how best to achieve this with the homebrew functionality currently on this site.
That said, homebrewing classes is something on the feature roadmap for the site that will be added by the devs eventually. So, this project is a ton of work that will at some point be rendered completely obsolete. At that point I would ask, if you want to homebrew to this level of detail - why not just do this pen-and-paper style until class homebrewing ability comes online, and save yourself a massive amount of headache trying to browbeat the software into doing this in a less-than-optimal way?
It all already set up for pen and paper... It's not even hard to do the things I want to do, I just have to do t a little hacky. Since all the wording is done, it's basically just copying and pasting. lol
3.5e Unearthed Arcana had some guidelines for this sort of thing. Thing is, it was easier in 3e because the most potent features of a class were feats, spell slots, and base attack bonus. The class features in 5e are less modular. I could see allowing a character to choose between increasing their caster level (and gaining spell slots), choosing to gain an extra attack, increasing sneak attack damage, etc. But other class abilities are harder to import.
