While back I made my initial version for the wizard's School of Infusion as a response to me finding the school of invention underwhelming. I went with the idea of a wizard gaining an ability similar to the sorcerer's meta magic, my execution of this is debatable, my reasoning for this is that I couldn't see why a caster who spends time researching magic couldn't have a feature similar to meta-magic. So as of late I've been wanting to give this another try and see what I could have done differently. So any suggestion or advice on this would be much appreciated whether if its about the mechanic works or about the individual infusions.
Here's a couple of examples that I've come up with on how to change how it works.
Infusions known
Equal to proficiency bonus
Intelligent modifier
fixed number (scales)
Number of uses
Equal to Intelligence modifier (short rest)
Intelligence mod x2
1/2 Wizard level (short rest)
Wizard level (would make this too similar to meta-magic imo)
Other
Success DC (scales with spell level)
Can change known infusions between sort rest or long rest
have each infusion have a heightened state (similar to blood rites)
Additional infusion options (including the ones in the link)
spend point to increase spell level by 1, but no higher than 9
ignore resistance, maybe include immunity to resistance (would replace the transmute infusion)
I feel meta magic is a response to the fact that Sorcerers are rather limited for a spell caster in regards to spells known. A Wizard has the most access to spells out of all the classes. I don't think a meta magic mechanic for them would be a good fit. For them to learn specific custom spells with variant details like, a meta magic effect, seems like fair game. An example might be a "Fireball" spell with a different damage type, called Holy Hand Grenade , for instance .
