As a first time DM I would like to start with an empire where music and dancing is forbidden (called losnafet or footloose ;) ). As a result, there is an underground movement of youngsters and bards. There is also a black market dealing with magical items such as toneless instruments that only the owner can hear or something called a silent stone.
On this last item: The silent stone creates a sphere from which sound can not enter nor escape. the area of effect, duration and charges vary on the type stone. If the stone is moved when it is activated, the spell dissipates.
One of my players want to play as a bard (I told him of this rebel movement and he was ofc happy to join) and I was wondering to give him such a stone at lvl 1. The stone would only have one charge per day, a radius of 5ft , duration 1 hr. This would be a common type of stone.
What do you guys think of the power of such an item?
PS. As it is the first time any of us are playing, I was still planning on doing LMoP first. These events would happen just outside the empire of losnafet.
Well it's potentially a bit overpowered, but some limitations could keep it from being abused. I think the main thing to keep it from being used to break combat early on would be to have it so that the aura of silence around the stone is automatically dispelled if the stone is moved out of the original 5 foot sphere. That way it's just a self-silencing device that allows the player to practice their music in this hostile environment, and not a level 1 player getting access to a version of the Silence Spell. It also doesn't give them a huge stealth bonus early on since they can't just keep it in their pocket and use it as a way to silence any movement... although it could still be used creatively in very specific situations.
Yes, I was also thinking the limitations make for a more normal item:
- moving = dispell (main use is for practice at home so movement is not necessary)
- the barrier works in both directions: players inside are deafened for everything happening outside.
- magic requiring the victim to hear the spell does not work if the parties are on both sides of the barrier
I was also thinking that higher-level stones (too heavy to carry) could be used for underground parties. Nobody can hear them but if a raid is on the way then the partygoers are completely oblivious. The use of these stones can make for interesting sieges as well
