I'm currently working on a new druid subclass for myself, but need help with a custom CR form formula. Read on for how I'm building it, or jump to the end for the exact issue.
The base class is fine, I've no issue there. I'm borrowing from both land and moon, and using spells that thematically suit spiritual energy and guardian summons.
But I've hit a hurdle with regards to the wild shape limits I've imposed for the form.
Instead of shape shifting into any beast that I've seen, I'm limiting myself to just 3 predetermined forms, think summoner 2 if you've ever played it.
They're more for utility purposes than anything. There's the strong tank form for when muscle is needed. The fast melee form for when speed is important, and sneaky stealth form for... Well sneaking.
Each form is modeled after the PC Barbarian, Monk, and Rogue, but the stats are based on predetermined beasts that offer the specific actions that align with the archetype, such as charge, standing leap and spider climb.
At low to mid level I can use the basic Cr/form guide for the druid to set what the stats are for each form at levels 2,4, and 8.
This allows me to make the forms stronger then a circle of the land druid, while keeping them under the circle of the moon forms.
Buuut this doesn't work at higher levels as I would be stuck at a CR 2 health pool, which makes this wild shape option more or less no different to the basic non-moon wild shape when I level beyond 10th.
So my question is. Does anyone know of a calculation or formula that I could use to increase the HP and/or Ac of the forms as I level up.
I'm willing to forego the preset stats, in exchange for a purely level based growth, but I need to make sure that the CR will not exceed that of a circle of the moon form in order to keep this subclass balanced and somewhere between both the land and the moon circles.
Maybe you could go with something fairly quick and easy to calculate like, "When Wild Shaped, you gain temporary HP equal to your current Druid Level". Although some play testing would probably have to come into play to see if that's enough to get the results you want... it could be that it needs 2x your current level. But either way, to me that seems to be the quickest way to make sure your wild shapes have a little more staying power without needing to do a lot of calculations each time.
It looks like I may have to go that way. I could keep the stats that I've already got sorted for 2nd, 4th and 8th but at 12th/14th have HP based off of set percentages of my current base HP.
A different % for each form.
The only reason I looking for a more stream lined/balanced approach is so that I can share the build, if it works out the way that I hoping.
