One of the problems I've noticed people having is that they don't run a full (~6 encounter) day, and are then surprised when encounters are easier than they expect. Thus, I was thinking to switch casters over to use encounter abilities. The method is pretty simple:
At any level where you have 3+ spells, you instead have 1 spell that recovers on a long or short rest.
Spells at levels where you have 1 or 2 spells continue to only recover on a long rest, but you may only cast one such spell per short rest.
Thus, an 11th level caster, instead of having spells 4/3/3/3/2/1, has spells E/E/E/E/2/1, and can only use one 5th or 6th level spell per short rest.
That does potentially give a large number of low level spells per day, but it also means you won't have someone casting 6/5/5/4/4/ in a 5 round boss fight, instead casting at most 6/4/3/2/1.
Obvious pitfalls with this idea?
