Hello All. The purpose of this post is to let people know that I created a homebrew race. I'm not sure why, but DnD Beyond does not have a "newest" filter for homebrew creations, or at least I was too inept to find it. So I'm letting you know about it here.
The race is bug-like race. It took a long time to make and I did the art myself. I got the idea from Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archives series, the Beetle borgs, and cheesy 50s and 60s horror flicks. As written, the race might be a little broken and definitely isn't balanced. If anyone wants to playtest it, just type Scarabin in the homebrew section.
I like this. the versatility makes it so a character can completely change gears if given 2 free weeks. maybe the normal features on top of that make it a wee bit FREAKING OVERPOWERED
Also, I am working on a Scarabin Lite that is a little more balanced. I think I was trying to create monsters and a player character race at the same time. In the meantime, you can balance the Scarabin Race by removing Needle Shot from Nimble, Claws from Warrior, Faerie Dust from Mating, and Telepathic Insight from Thinking. This was just to get all of my unfiltered ideas out there so people could help me adjust things as needed. This is my first race that I've ever made public, and I didn't realize that you can't edit things after they are published on this site at all. So that's my bad. I'll post the lite version here in a few hours. Then you can tell me that the Lite version is still over powered and I can then spend another 8 hours remaking the Scarabin into a SUPER lite version. Which people will say is still overpowered, at which point I will just give up and tell people to deal with it.
Readjusted some things about the original version.
- Changed the named to Scarabinii because it sounds cooler, and creating different versions of species is against the rules for homebrew so this is my workaround. This is now a parallel universe version of the Scarabin who have slightly different powers.
- Versatile Carapace now only takes three days, you are a weak marshmallow for only one day, the level penalty is still one week long. Big Buff.
- Hive Mind is now telepathy with other Scarabinii within 60 feet. Big Nerf
- Telepathic Insight is now the old Hive Mind but you can only ask one question. Another Big Nerf.
- Corrected a bunch of spelling mistakes and grammar. Ugh.
- Added the word Scarabinii in front of the Subrace names because DnDBeyond has issues with grouping. Should make things easier.
- Fixed the Movement Speeds
- Thinking now flies 20 ft
Added Variant Versions
- The Variant Versions are less broken, more balanced for a DM who hates fun and lacks creativity.
- Lower Ability Scores except for Thinking Carapace
- No special powers. Specifically no Needle Shot, Claws, Faerie Dust, or Telepathic Insight. Those abilities are gone.
- Variant Version has some ability score downsides when compared to other races.
No I will not nerf the Versatile Carapace. You can sacrifice their coolest ability at your table if you want to. I will have no part of that.

Actually it’s 3 weeks.
