One of my other characters has a pet rat picked up from the "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" adventure and I thought it'd be neat to have a one-shot where the rat imagines being on an adventure of his own.
If a pet background isn't viable, I'll check out other backgrounds.
Four rats meet under the moonlight. They feel that the fates have brought them together, to face what destiny awaits. But how could animals from such different backgrounds ever work together?
Background: Pet (Animal); Skills: Insight (from in-depth dealings with humanoids), Performance (cute hijinks). Languages: one language your master speaks. Tools: one gaming set (e.g. Frisbee, mouse on-a-string, maze, etc). Feature: your master will provide food, lodging and assistance.
Background: Agricultural (Animal); Skills: Animal Handling (life with other creatures), Athletics (hard work). Languages: one language used by the humanoid farmers. Tools: one musical instrument (soothing animal noise). Feature: common domesticated animals will generally assist you to the best of their ability.
Background: Wild (Animal); Skills: Stealth, Survival. Languages: Sylvan, Elvish. Feature: you know the location of the nearest source of fresh water.
Background: Urban Wildlife (Animal); Skills: Stealth, Sleight of Hand (pinching food from humanoids). Languages: Common. Tools: Thieves' Tools. Feature: you can always locate free food in a town or city.
The pet background is great. Our new campaign is starting soon and one of the players is playing an awakened Capuchin Monkey that was the pet of my character before he was awakened.

What adventures await this Rat Pack?
This is awesome! I'm gonna have to share this with my DM.
