Hey everybody, I've been using DnD Beyond for awhile, but this is my first real post in the forums. I came up with the item below for my home game, and am trying to come up with a good name for it. (Questions and comments are welcome also.)
This off-white tallow candle is about 2 inches wide and one foot long, with arcane marks carved into the sides. When lit, it smells vaguely of bacon and gives off a low, greasy light that provides dim light in a ten-foot radius. The smoke however will coalesce into a Smoke Mephit that is under the command of whoever lit the candle for as long as the flame burns. In addition to Auran and Ignan, the mephit automatically speaks the language of lighter of the candle, and must carry out the commands issued to it, though its interpretations of the command may differ from the candle lighter’s meaning.
When found, the candle has 1d4 charges. Lighting the candle uses a charge, and summons the mephitis for 24 hours, or until the mephit is destroyed or the candle is snuffed by the user. Either way, the charge has been expended. Once lit, the candle can only be extinguished by its user. At the end of the 24 hours, the user can decide if the candle should continue to burn (expending another charge) or be snuffed out. Once lit, the candle can only be extinguished by its user. Each time the candle is lit, the same mephit is summoned from the smoke at full hit points.
The candle is a pedestal candle. That size and diameter is called a pedestal candle. You are creating an elemental, or summoning an elemental, albeit a mixed air and fire elemental. So this could be a Pedestal Candle of Summoning Elementals, or a Pedestal Candle of Elemental Summoning, or a Pedestal Candle of Elemental Control, or a Pedestal Candle of Elemental Magic.
However, while your description is interesting, you could mess with the players a bit by adjusting the attributes ...
... The smoke will coalesce into a Smoke Mephit after 1d4 rounds with 12 HP. The Mephit is under the control of the PC that lit the candle until the candle is extinguished, but may not travel beyond 60ft from the candle while it is lit. Once the candle is extinguished the Mephit is no longer under anyone's control, and the Mephit dissolves in 1d6 rounds. While the candle is lit, the Mephit will gain 1 HP per round up to a maximum of 30 HP. In addition to Auran and ... ... A new candle will burn for a total of 24 hours.
With or without my description, I think it is an interesting magic item. The only thing I would like to know is "why was it created?" and "by who?"

If you want the actual campaign answer, there is a evil alchemist who uses them to send mephits to spy on his enemies. I thought it would be fun to leave one behind in his lab for the party to see what they do with it. They are still tier one, so I wanted to limit the scope of the magic to summon one particular elemental, and not leave it open to other stuff. If they want that, they could study it, or his notes, and build up to it.
