Thoughts on having the gust cantrip do like a d4 or a d6 bludgeoning damage? It’s powerful enough to push someone back 5 feet I figure that’s got to be about equal to a solid hit in the chest from a club or the like. Any thoughts? Or would that make it too powerful for a cantrip?
The difference between pushing and dealing damage is the PSI. Wind moves a sail boat without ripping the sails (usually). Compressing that force to the level needed to deal damage is significant.
Giving Gust the option of dealing damage isn't game breaking, but it would be overpowered for a single cantrip. If you're willing to give the player a free cantrip, then it's no problem to enhance Gust instead.

some good points good points but i still want my airbending slice
If the target is adjacent to a wall, or other solid obstacle, many DM's will rule that they take bludgeoning damage, as they cannot move.
I would suggest making it either-or: You can choose to shove the target 5ft, or you can do 1d6 bludgeoning damage. I would also make the damage contingent on a dex save, which would be inline with the movement, which requires a str save
okay pretty reasonable were making some progress here

so your saying you want to make it an airbending slice
sounds cool and more or less balanced
