Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online Play-by-Post on Discord DM’s Experience: Three years Location/Timezone: N/A, Asynchronous Game Schedule: Each player should post at least once a day Roles sought: 3 Players Game style: Roleplay, Heroic, Exploring Dragon Lairs, Improving a Home Base
The dragons began migrating en masse a year ago and claimed their new lairs. Wherever they dwell, the Material Plane itself bends to their will, so the very fabric of our world is in flux. People, monsters, and other creatures of the wilderness have been displaced, leading to further strife—or in some cases, strange alliances. Some even say that shapeshifted dragons live among us, whether peacefully or not.
You survived the incursion, but it affected you deeply. Who were you before the dragons arrived? What has happened to you in the past year? What will you do as the course of history and the centers of power shift? Which dragons will become your allies or enemies?
Hi there! I’m Tidy (31, he/him, DM for 3 years), and I’m seeking three players for a play-by-post 5e character-driven campaign focused on delving into dragon lairs and resolving personal conflicts from the PCs’ backstories.
In this campaign, we’ll use Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons to “re-mystify” dragons. They won’t just be big flying lizards. They will be extraordinary, and even the regions around their lairs and the treasures in their hoards will be teeming with magical effects. Many other monsters and creatures will be involved, but dragons will be the movers and shakers of the world.
Our starting adventure will focus on one lair and one dragon. We’ll link the adventure to each PC’s backstory so that we have reasons to be there and to work together. Rather than having a connection to the dragon itself, you may choose to be linked to a place, treasure, creature, or some other thing we can work into the story.
We’ll begin on the far outskirts of a lair where the PCs meet, possibly for the first time. Each one has traveled here for their own reason. During session zero, we’ll decide the type of dragon, and I’ll build the adventure from there. I’ll use each character’s traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws to customize the adventure to our party.
After the first lair, we’ll decide if we want to continue or not, so there’s no pressure to commit to a long campaign. If we do continue, we’ll use a “dragon-of-the-week” episodic structure. To ensure our adventures are always character-centric, every dragon or area we encounter will have some tie to a character’s personal goals or backstory. To ensure we also have a larger narrative, discovering what caused the dragon migration will likely be part of the campaign and lead into the endgame.
The setting is relatively generic medieval fantasy like the Forgotten Realms, except without racism, sexism, etc. Our region will consist of small, isolated settlements scattered across mostly unexplored wilderness—a “points of light” setting, if you will. You can determine what your home village was like and if it still exists.
I will probably make a custom hex map for our homebrew setting. It will be blank at first, but as we establish backstories, explore regions, and pursue goals, we’ll add new hexes one at a time.
The tone of the campaign is “heroic” and “hopeful,” by which I mean that the PCs are good people who do the right thing and try to maintain hope even in the face of loss. Think Lord of the Rings. Your PC must be (Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic) Good aligned. This campaign isn’t for PCs who do things like stealing from each other or poking the owlbear just to cause trouble. No edge-lords. No self-centered, aloof, or too-cool attitudes.
The type of player best suited for this game has ambition for their character’s life. They love internal and external character development, and they are more than willing to take the initiative and contribute when the party has a choice to make. They are curious and willing to push the story forward so we won’t fizzle out. They’re consistently kind. Players should be 18+ and love writing fiction.
Starting level is 5. Fixed HP. Standard Array for stats.
Official subclasses are welcome. Dragon-related ones are encouraged. No third-party content or homebrew subclasses/classes/races please.
Each PC must have 2 Traits, 2 Ideals, 2 Bonds, and 2 Flaws. (I’d love to read any backstory you write too!)
I have every D&D book on here, so if you join the campaign before making a character, you’ll have access to ALL the options.
At the end of the adventure, we’ll ask the following questions to determine if we’ve leveled up.
Since last level-up:
Have we explored a new dragon lair?
Have we changed something meaningful about our corner the world?
Has each PC resolved a difficult personal conflict from their backstory OR accomplished a difficult personal goal?
Has each PC struggled with one of their Flaws?
Has each PC expressed one of their Ideals?
Has each PC acted upon one of their Bonds?
Has each PC looted a meaningful treasure?
Have we become allies with a dragon or overcome one?
When we can answer yes to all eight, we level up! This reward system allows us to zero in on what our campaign is really about.
We can also level up our home. Once we claim a lair or choose a village as our base, I’ll make a “base advancement map” (like from the game Blades in the Dark) where at the start of each adventure, we’ll pick one advancement we’d like to add to our base (alchemist, blacksmith, magical defenses, etc.). I’ll work an opportunity to attain that advancement into the adventure.
We’ll use the “lines and veils” tool to ensure everyone at the table is comfortable.
We’ll use Beyond for character sheets and Avrae to roll dice on Discord. I use the 3D Virtual Tabletop app to make combat maps. The art for our maps will mainly come from D&D books and CzePeku’s Patreon.
As a PBP game, time zones aren’t terribly important, but I will be most active from 8:00 a.m. CST to 8:00 p.m. CST.
All right, I’ll stop now! If you’re still interested, then to apply, send me a private message or post here with a little about yourself (at least your TTRPG experience, your character idea, something you like best about D&D, and what appeals to you most about this campaign).
yello hello I'm interested in joining. I have a bit of experience having played a few games but was never able to finish a campaign but this one looks fun and id like to see how it goes
i was thinking a bard that has a connection with dragons after his father left him with with a special lyre that was the reason he had to leave since it held the power of a dragon that his clan hated within it. what interest me about this campaign is the concept and i want to see how the dragons affect the story your going to tell.
Honestly this is a campaign I’d love to read the campaign diary of, it sounds like my kind of fiction or new book obsession. The only reason why I wouldn’t apply for a PC slot is because I tend to explore some darker or mature themes that my characters either struggle with or learn to cope with (I’ve been a character driven writer for 10 years at the least with a lot of careful research into psychology, but I am no means a professional psychologist) so I would love to simply read and watch if at all possible.
This could be up my alley. A question or two though. How detailed do the posts need to be? Could you give an example? How will combat work? Will we use standard combat rules even though it is play by post?
@Daydren0 Good questions. Posts would include at least some action and dialogue so others have something to work with. For example, if I’m playing a character named Bilbo, I might write, “Bilbo approaches the hoard slowly and waves for the others to follow. He whispers, ‘I don’t see any dragon. Maybe it’s not home.
Combat is handled normally using screenshots of a digital tabletop (3D Virtual Tabletop) pasted into Discord so the players don’t have to leave the app or have accounts elsewhere. The Avrae dice bot allows us to track HP and other details without much work.
Hi, I would be interested in joining if you still have character slots. As a player, I have a fair amount of experience (let's just say I started playing when the second edition and THAC0 were still a thing). I'm in the London timezone but I can definitely commit to posting at least once a day. Probably 2 or 3 would be my postings usually.
As a character, I have an idea for a multi-classed, multi-cultural, dwarf-raised high elf (though it would require Tasha's rules to be allowed to build the way I want). She got separated from her Dwarven clan during an attack and is looking for them, hoping they're all still well and alive.
Please let me know if you would have a slot for me :)

Completely understandable! Sorry for the late reply, the last few months have been a bit busy.
I can PM you my discord, though out of curiosity; was this ever picked up?
