Im sorry but ive already gotten like 3 people from lvl 1 to 6 using the essenstials kit and dragon of icespire peak for my first time being a DM and i think i caught on kinda quick and their was some bumps but we as a group got through it. granted it took like 3 months to get their but when we did it was kinda fun and cool we all enjoyed it. however these days people dont seem as invested or maybe they are burned out idk im building my own faerun and toril and i know its basic and blah but i think a lot of cool and fun stories can happen and it will help me be more experienced as a DM and the players more familiar with higher level play. i dont know maybe i should just chill out and read more of the textbooks and formulate my game more. what do you think? BTW i just started playing this year.
Well, that is challenge i suppose. So, i will take a crack at it. One, the story has to be a collaborative effort, take ques from your players and draw them in. Reference their back grounds and back story to make the campaign about their story. What i tend to avoid is creating a set line of events and try to get the players to go to point A to B, then B to C. this never works out and the players will derail that quick. So, create a modular frame-work with 3-5 encounters, encounters can be social events, puzzles, some sort of non-combat challenge, and then at least one or two fights depending. But focus on players and what they want and you spice it up with a story, some interesting NPC's, and some sort of challenge.
this is all true i want to impliment that, but i have characters that make nonexistent or lack luster backstories that gives me little to work with. i never want to railroad my players and i used the xp system for dragonof icespire peak and one of my players had a pistol it was a whole thing. i was new still but as we were playing and learning i saw how broken everything was. i roped myself into a DM nightmare haha. however i managed to learn a lot about dming and i know my players had a lot of fun in parts of the campaign. my playgroup of people also want to try and DM but they know its a lot of work that they a lot of times dont want to put the money or effort in or both. i put a lot of effort in my game but we are in our mid to late 20s and some have kids and full time jobs etc. so consistency is not a factor. i designed my game to have on the fly adventuring and playing but still adheres to the game of D&D which makes it sandbox and allows you as a player to impact it based on your level of power and influence on the npcs and commoners of the world. its also based in forgotten realms so maybe thats why they dont care its too basic idk. also players dont want to play by themselves and idk i started a higher level campagin that starts at lvl 6 if you have experience with the game and 5th lvl if you dont have experience but know about the game and have read the rules books etc. but i also have other adventures i could use but damn i doubt ppl wanna restart the same adventure even though they didnt do everything. they did get the magical dragon slaying sword but my players in fought so much it bled into the game and a dude killed himself and deleted his char sheet and i was like wow dude it was good for the storyline of the characters and party overall because they are all lvl 6 and 7 and started at lvl 1 and dude they were tripping im about to start playing solo lol.
It is very fun, but cooperation is a big factor and paying attention and being interactive. So its hard finding a group with the same schedule and motivation too play or they are just generally uninterested in the game. Internet is here though i guess so we can discuss wanting to play but never do lmfao.
