for an overview. This will be a plot based story where things happen and your actions will grow to have an effect on what happens in the world. For a very long time in the game there will be no magic items and everyone is human. You won't be able to use spells in combat (unless you are very sneaky) and healing will be rare. Because equipment and magic will be weak for a long time your starting stats will be stronger than normal 17 16 15 14 12 10; max HP at 1st level roll hp at new level with one reroll if you don't like what you get. Users of magic (wizard, cleric etc) get and ready spells as normal but you don't use spell slots. All spells are cast as rituals and take 10 minutes plus 1 minute per level. Cantrips take one full round where you can't do anything else. Healing spells take 1 hour plus 10 minutes per level. I don't track xp, levels come from reaching milestones.
When the game starts spellcasters will have no spells available but you can still be a wizard or whatever. Just have a good real world backstory about how that works. As time goes by your magic will slowly switch on. By second level you will have spells as per PHB. But remember, all spellcasting is ritual magic. Downside it takes a long time. Upside the number of spells cast per day is limited only by the number of hours in the day.
The game starts in Yachats, Oregon, a small sea side village on the 101 highway run up the coast. You can be a local or just passing through. Do a background that explains any skills or class abilities your character has.
I’ve been playing D&D longer than most people have been alive. I remember the Red Box Set. I haven’t played for years now but I got interested when I saw the 2024 books were on sale so I bought them and got interested again. I don’t know all the ins and outs of dndbeyond.com yet so be patient with me. I get the impression I’ll need to get a subscription to run the game properly and will probably have to buy digital copies of the books.
I’m in Australia so there may be some time zone issues regarding when I reply to messages
