Are you interested in playing D&D with a large community of players? Do you want to play but don't have a consistent availability and thus struggle to find campaigns that work for you? Do you like experimenting with builds and magic items in a way that is difficult in normal games?
You might like the Hotel!
The Hotel is a 2014 D&D 5e discord community with many DMs and players. We are an 18+, english-speaking server primarily active in the NA timezones, though we have many players from other countries as well. Most of the games played are pick-up games/oneshots, where a DM will post information about a game they want to run and players can sign up with one of their characters. Typically, there are two or three of the sessions happening per day, but that can vary. There are also several traditional campaigns that happen on a weekly basis. Players can work with DMs to craft meaningful stories for their characters, and can form bonds with other player characters as well. Most play is done in live sessions within voice calls, but DMs also run TRP (text roleplay) worlds, where characters can do PbP (Play by Post) adventuring as well.
The Hotel (in-universe) is a nexus connecting dozens of different worlds. Characters come and go as they please, exploring to their heart's content and taking time off in the safety of the Hotel to rest and relax between adventures. There are several areas where your characters can roleplay with other characters outside of sessions and build relationships with their fellow adventurers.
Players are able to make and play several characters, deciding which one to bring to any given session. Character creation is done at level 3 with a 35 point buy, allowing for higher ability scores than standard D&D 5e. Levelling happens from hours played, so playing in more sessions will allow you to progress your character faster. In addition, sessions reward a character with gold, which can be spent to purchase magic items, with availability depending on the character's level. Characters also earn Downtime Points that can be used to learn tools and languages, craft items, earn additional gold, and more.
There is no level cap, characters can progress past level 20 by multiclassing, allowing for builds and concepts that normally would not work with a strict level 20 limit. Once a character hits level 23, they are considered a Tier 5 character, and can get powerful options like the stat-boosting manuals and Boons. A Tier 5 character can also obtain an artifact to signify their strength. Have you read about the Book of Exalted Deeds or the Mask of the Dragon Queen and thought about how cool it would be to have that as a player? Well, now you can!
DMs run one or more worlds connected to the hotel, and can choose to host sessions whenever they would like, containing whatever they would like.Simply post information about your session (such as start time, desired character level, and expected contents) in the Looking to Host channel and interested players will sign up. DMs earn extra hours and gold for DMing sessions as thanks for their effort. DMs can also run systems other than D&D if there is enough player interest, though this is usually done in a campaign format.
Every officially published source for Fifth Edition D&D is allowed, including character options and almost all magic items (some are obviously banned, but it's a short list). We are strictly using the 2014 ruleset, 2024 content is not allowed for official use in the server.
