The Midnight Covenant is a homebrew D&D5e (2014) campaign that I have created over the last 3-4 years. I have both played and DM'd this wonderful game since the late 1980's, starting with AD&D and playing through 2nd Edition. I took a 10 year break from the game and then started playing and DMing again approximately 5 years ago. My DM style is based both on set events and integrating characters backstory into the main storyline. I want player characters to feel as though they have purpose in this world and have a reason to absolutely despise the Big Bad. Of course it takes a few sessions to begin to develop these things however, I know we will all have fun and enjoy the story together. There will be ample opportunity for roleplay as well. I would add an 'About Me' section but I think I just explained that above :) We are currently looking for at least one more player!
And so, a short recap of the campaign so far as we have officially played four sessions now
Six strangers arrive in the rainy port town of Windhill, exhausted from a stormy voyage. They barely make it inside The Rusty Gull tavern before a nervous gnome approaches with an offer: investigate his newly purchased Old Quarter house… and deal with whatever is hiding in the basement.
Easy gold, right? Wrong.
What begins as a simple “squatter removal” quickly spirals into something far darker. In the depths of the abandoned Cricksparrow House, the party discovers chained prisoners, strange alchemical contraptions, and a whispering book about harvesting souls. Bugbears patrol secret rooms. Portraits watch with sentient eyes. Barrels buzz. Grain sacks move. Something down there is working, plotting, breeding fear.
Worse yet, many people in the Kingdom of Sairare are dying from a mysterious plague: victims fall paralyzed, slip into terror-filled dreams, and never wake up.
The source? A mad scientist and torturer hidden beneath a crooked house.
The heroes battle their way through vicious guards and brutal enforcers like Sevrin Krail, the Collector of Silence, then uncover the real horror — Dr. Malvric Dorn, an alchemist mixing night hag spittle and carrion crawler venom to create a weaponized disease. His goal isn’t destruction… it’s control. An antidote is his currency, and Windhill’s population are the bargaining chips.
There’s hope, though — a young cleric of Chauntea, somehow immune, lies barely alive in a cage. And one of the rescued prisoners bears a tattoo of an ancient cult symbol tied to the rogue of the group, Conrad’s, tragic past.
Now, with Dorn bound, secrets in hand, and the disease spreading through Windhill, the team stands at the edge of something big:
Why are cult symbols appearing again after decades of silence?
Who is Devron Gravor, the mysterious second buyer of the house?
And what exactly is crawling deeper beneath Windhill’s streets?
If you like a campaign full of mystery, ancient cults, dungeon crawling, and slowly unraveling conspiracies, Windhill and the rest of Nicardia is waiting.
We are playing on Roll20. GM name is Yormaker If you create an account you should find my game listing there. If not please feel free to email me at r54sm1965@gmail.com
About Character Creation: I would appreciate classes and races only from the 2014 Players Handbook, Tasha's and Xanathar's guide to everything. First session (session zero) is free. It would be appreciated if after the first session you, the player, develop a backstory. It doesn't have to be overly detailed. Something short is fine and we can discuss expanding the backstory in downtime if wanted.
Session length: 3 to 3 and a half hours Paypal $15 US currency weekly. We will not be playing the week of Christmas.
All experience levels are welcomed, if you are new to either D&D 5e, Roll20, or RPG's in general I will do my best to teach you the ropes and you don't have to worry about not knowing things, we've all been in that position. As long as you're eager to learn and patient things will be fine. Luckily the current group of players is a good mix of experienced to inexperienced in their knowledge of the game. They are a very good group and I'm glad they are all patient with newcomers. I'm pretty knowledgeable in the rules of 5e and can strive to provide smooth sessions without having to thumb through the rulebook all the time. Constructive criticism is always welcomed after sessions, I strive to make the best experience for my players. I especially like when players all express ideas and theories about the events happening in the campaign. Honestly it lends to the story and aids the DM in both storytelling and understanding what each player enjoys.
I have a discord channel and we play voice only. Currently there are 6 players and am looking for one more.
I look forward to your application. Please leave a message if this feels like the right kind of campaign for you.
We have already started the campaign (played 4 sessions) but I can integrate new characters in easily and look forward to doing so.
