I am fairly new to playing DnD, all of which minus 1 session have been virtual and all through DnD Beyond's Virtual Table Top for maps and such.
I've played with the same group and while I enjoy their style, I find myself wanting a little less on rails(like being unable to break free of being grappled by an NPC because they're integral to the plot, even though I'm a goliath barb with advantage to being grappled) and open to spur of the moment actions(attempting to halt combat with some bandits who are trying to kidnap a Person of Import, instead of just murdering them because they're bandits).
Since my experience is limited to this group I know that there is a lot of ways to play DnD. I've never had to manage spell components, explained to me as "you have a pouch that has all the components that you'd need, minus the truly powerful spells" instead of having to juggle inventory or shop around so much. I don't believe a lot of groups I watch on youtube require spell components, but I just want to be up front about my exposure to that.
Additionally, and I believe this is a bigger alteration to how I understand DnD, is you can cast more than 1 spell, as bonus action spell, as long as the spell is able to be cast as a bonus action. From what I'm told you get one spell per turn, that's it. While I can see how that is incredibly powerful, and I'm not married to the idea as it can make my character feel overpowered, but also burn spell slots a lot faster.
All that being said, if anyone is willing to take on a newer player and running a relaxed game Monday or Wednesday evening around 8pmEST/EDT, I'm available.
Thank you for reading and I hope your day goes well.
