I've started playing a Sun Soul Monk recently and I just have some questions about some of the abilities. Clearly I'm not interested in power gaming since I've chosen this subclass, I honestly find it fun and it's abilities are cool thematically but unfortunately they lack definition.
1st question: What kind of action/attack is Searing Sunburst? The ability text is as follows:
Searing Sunburst
At 11th level, you gain the ability to create an orb of light that erupts into a devastating explosion. As an action, you magically create an orb and hurl it at a point you choose within 150 feet, where it erupts into a sphere of radiant light for a brief but deadly instant.
Each creature in that 20-foot-radius sphere must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 radiant damage. A creature doesn't need to make the save if the creature is behind total cover that is opaque.
You can increase the sphere's damage by spending ki points. Each point you spend, up to a maximum of 3, increases the damage by 2d6.
It simply says as an action. Is this my entire combat turn like a spell, or is it another option of attack like Radiant Sun Bolt? It isn't a spell like Searing Arc Strike that clearly says it's just Burning hands, and Radiant Sun Bolt says it's a ranged spell attack. This just happens.... Does this mean I could theoretically do this from magical invisibility since it doesn't define it as an attack when it clearly is an attack? If I were DM I would not allow that since I believe the intent to attack qualifies without the specific text, but it would be nice if it were a little more defined.
2nd Question: Since these abilities, Radiant Sun Bolt / Searing Sunburst are radiant in nature, light based, how do they interact with the spell Darkness? It says non magical light cannot illuminate it however Radiant Sun Bolt says it's a ranged spell attack. Since it's a spell attack does that qualify as magic? And Searing Sunburst lacks any mention of any keywords like magic or spell so I honestly don't know what to call that either.
Thank you ahead of time for advice or suggestions.
1) It's just an action, full stop. Like how you can Attack, Cast a Spell, Dodge, Dash, etc. You add "Searing Sunburst" to the list. It's not the Attack action, it's its own discrete thing.
2) They don't interact in any way. If you can't see the target because of the darkness, you'd roll with disadvantage as normal, but assuming you hit the sun bolt would deal damage as normal and... that's it. Searing Sunburst would just do what it always does.
Thanks! Awesome, sometimes the answer is truly the easiest solution.
I may be remembering the wrong game right now. But I believe 5e plays by the rules that anything that forces a save or makes an attack roll against somebody counts as an attack. Even if it doesn't explicitely use the attack action. So you'd still lose invisibility launching this off. But like casting a spell from invisibility they wouldn't be able to counter you from doing it.
