First let's preface this by I understand that this will not be allowed as rules as written. I'm only wondering if this would be reasonable to ask my DM to allow.
So far the Radiant Sun Bolt is a ranged spell attack that can be used in lieu of of the Monk's attack action up to a range of 30 ft using the Monk's Dexterity to hit and additional damage with the correlating Martial Arts die in damage.
The Dedicated Weapon optional feature allows a Monk to meditate during a rest to bestow their Martial Arts prowess to a weapon that they are already proficient in, this bestows the benefits from their Martial Arts abilities. Mainly being able to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action for free after using a Monk weapon or unarmed strike as an attack action.
I know you can just forgo this whole thing and use Dedicated Weapon on a shortbow with the same benefits as well as a superior range but would like to continue the aesthetic of the Sun Soul monk with the given features. In past editions of D&D you could elect such powers as the target of weapon specific feats, including rays and blasts which gave me this idea in the first place.
Like I said it's not about functionality as much as flavor, everything I want to do systematically I can already do with a shortbow. I just think sticking with the theme of a warrior who chucks ki blasts would be much cooler than one running around on and off shooting a shortbow. What do you guys think? Is it even worth bringing up?
Why do you even want the ability to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action if you want to primarily use Radiant Sun Bolt? If you get into melee range you'll have disadvantage on your ranged attacks, and disengaging will either cost you your action or a ki point that you could've used to make more ranged attacks as a bonus action.
Just an extra option I suppose. Maybe to move in to use stunning strike once a turn. I started with the crusher feat as a variant human and can push people once a round with bludgeoning damage so I can potentially throw 2 ki blasts unarmed strike and push the opponent back to free disengage to kite.
Again I can accomplish this with a shortbow I just think that looks less cool in my head.
You could always make an unarmed strike with one of your two normal attacks once you've hit 5th level. That'd still give you the Martial Arts bonus action while leaving you free to make one sun bolt attack.
Radiant Sun Bolt is much, much better than a shortbow against many creatures (e.g. ghosts, shadows, vampires, elementals, zombies, swarms) and the monk class is primarily designed to be a melee attacker, so asking to get all of your sun bolts and still get a free melee attack risks coming off as wanting to have your cake and eat it too.
..coming off as wanting to have your cake and eat it too.
I don't understand... why cant eat the cake if it's mine? I want it so I can eat it... I'm confused... whats going on here? =P
But in all do seriousness, there really isn't any benefit from using a short bow in place of Range (and early level damage), once you reach a certain level. You COULD always flavor text that the Sunbolts are being fired from your bow, and if you wanted to argue with your DM that the range is equal to your short bow, well.. yeah.. CAKE!!! Depending on the party composition, I don't see how 30-feet vs 80-feet isn't a ground breaking issue that would turn heads, but its a huge advantage (look at soul Soul Knife Rogue. They can throwtheir Psychic 60-feet!).
Flavor text is something you'll have to work out with your DM, and it really depends on how your table plays the game. so it's a toss up in the air.

That is a fair point. I hadn't considered it being that overly advantageous. Thank you for pointing that out.
