Can someone explain to me why Monks that wear armor can't use their free unarmed strike bonus action but they can use Flurry of Blows (without martial arts die).
So if I take a level in fighter or paladin and get Unarmed Fighting (1d8 attacks) and then wear armor, my character can still deal good damage with a Flurry of Punches using a bonus action, but he's completely unable to throw a single normal punch as a bonus action.
1 level in Fighter + 2 levels in monk wearing Heavy Armor: "Man I really wish i could hit the enemy with a single punch a second time this turn. That's a shame. Well I guess I;ll use some Ki/Focus and hit the enemy with TWO punches instead." WTF?
Don’t try to use logic to explain game mechanics. The restrictions are for balance and class theme/flavor. Being able to use FoB requires an expenditure of a limited resource which allows you to do something you cannot normally do (BA unarmed strike while wearing armor).

I've read you post several times and I guess I am not getting the gist of your complaint. As a Monk you get one attack action. If you are unarmed or using a Monk weapon with no shield or armor, then you get a free bonus action attack. Flurry of Blows is still the free bonus attack, except you get more by spending Ki. Nothing changes. It doesn't matter if you "dip" into the Fighter class, if you wear armor, a shield or attack with a non-Monk weapon, you don't get a bonus attack/aka Flurry of Blows.

This is incorrect. The description of Flurry is completely separate from that of the standard bonus attack, and flurry has no restrictions placed upon it.
Now, conceptually, they may be similar, but mechanically, they're different. Which is weird. Presumably they decided that flurry requires a limited resource, so doesn't need other restrictions. (Or they were sloppy.)
This is 2014 rules; I don't know if it's changed in 2024.

2024 the mechanics changed that FOB is not triggered by an attack action anymore. So you can lead with FOB at the start of your turn as the bonus action because you don’t need to initiate attack first.
Remember FOB is a limited resource based on FPs or KIs, once depleted they can not be used, look at it like sorcerer points for casting.
so really the only restriction placed on FOB is you needing to make an “unarmed attack “ ie headbutt kicking punches, so wearing armor has no impact, just for other monk abilities.
it’s a personal players choice, as I like wearing no armor and having the highest based AC (because someone in the group casted shield) and topped my AC . It’s a cool feeling knowing you are less hit because of your high AC and wearing absolutely nothing.
Like mentioned previously mechanical interpretation is fodder because it’s all based on each individual game table play.

Maybe the heavy armor messes up with their movement, agility, etc. So they can't move fast enough to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action. But spending a ki point sort of "boosts" their physical capabilities enough to push through and do their Flurry of Blows.

That would be 2 bonus actions ( boost to speed) and (FOB), in my opinion. But your game play is yours to decide. But if you’re looking to stay within core that’s impossible.

I think you misunderstood their point. It isn’t like they are saying about movement using BA to dash or something it’s just that the armor is too restrictive to move quickly and freely enough to get the BA unarmed strike off. But with using a Focus point it pushes them beyond their normal boundaries to get off two FoB attacks. It has nothing to do with actual moving from one place to another, SotW.

@ Jaymezz149 I just verified this by donning a shield in the Character creation and Bonus action damage was removed. Proving my point that Flurry of Blows is just an expansion of the Bonus Action. [REDACTED]

FoB makes unarmed attacks. The damage of your unarmed attacks is affected by your armor setup, but that's separate from whether or not you can do it at all.

And using the character builder to verify a rule isn’t a foolproof idea since there are things the DDB has not implemented or implemented poorly and don’t reflect the actual rules, since day one.
