With how popular D&D has become, more than in any other time period, I am surprised there hasn't been talk of creating a new, updated D&D MMO. DDO is outdated and Neverwinter is subpar.
I would love to see an open world D&D mmo set in the Forgotten Realms, from Ten-Towns to Baldur's gate to Sundabar, and everywhere in between including the Underdark. Gameplay like a cross between Skyrim and DDO but open-world concept like a cross of Neverwinter and Skyrim. But updated everything with a current age game engine and graphics, monster models, etc. They could create a living, breathing environment with randomized creature activity, like raiding goblin groups and wandering giants. Randomized weather patterns are also easy today. I would even take a single-player game, though those are becoming less popular with things like cash-shops in MMO's. D&D is a tough one though; I have never seen a system perfect a turn based system like we can have in a pen and paper game. There are too many options for a game, in my opinion. Nonetheless, it would be cool to have a new D&D game that could do the Sword Coast justice.
Divinity Original Sin 2 is a shining example of how single RPGs can excel in today's cash-grab lootbox-flooded market, and it has a brilliant turn-based system as well. Likewise, whilst not turn-based, the Witcher 3 still sells well despite now being several years old. Both made the top 12 selling games on Steam last year.
There's definitely a huge audience that is into the RPG genre, and with D&D being so iconic, I'm surprised we've not seen more D&D games in general. I would be queuing up if there was a quality game put out, online or otherwise.
Along with Divinity Original Sin 2, I'll also put XCOM 2 out there as another fantastic turn-based game, although it's not an RPG. If you've not played either then I highly recommend them!
